Zombie Hoard Is Proud To Present
The "Weed Of The Living Dead" Video Contest

Picture
Zombie Hoard and Mike Bilinski, the man behind Weed of the Living Dead are going to make you famous!

For those of you not familiar with WotLD here is a brief rundown!

After Jason looses his job and girlfriend in the same week, his brother/roommate Kevin decides to cheer him up with a night of partying and classic zombie movies. Just one problem: The weed they smoked has been tainted by a powerful hallucinogen and the TV broadcast they are watching contains dark subliminal messages. The duo eventually pass out, but when they awaken they find themselves in the black and white zombie filled world of the movie they were watching!

Weed is being directed by Michael Bilinski and will be starring Jason Hughes, Kevin Ridgeway, Jennifer Gramatges, Israel Moren, among others!

And now on to the Contest!

There will be SIX total winners. 1 grand prize, 2 runners up and 3 honorable mentions.

Here is a breakdown of the prizes.

Grand Prize (1):
Your video will be featured in WOTLD and a behind the scenes documentary. You will also receive a full color WOTLD t-shirt, and a limited edition card stock poster signed by members of the cast & crew.

Runner Up (2):
Your video will be featured in WOTLD and a behind the scenes documentary. You will also receive a limited edition card stock poster signed by members of the cast & crew.

Honorable Mention (3):
Your video will be featured in a behind the scenes documentary.

All winners will be credited in the film and those credits will be submitted to IMDB.  The top three videos will be featured in a scene where the main characters Jason and Kevin go on a video chat site. The only requirement is that it be a web cam style video, be no longer than one minute in length, not feature any copy written material in the background, not break any laws or defame anyone/anything and be entirely your own work. Keep in mind this is NOT a zombie scene, just a web cam chat scene.

We want you to go wild with it. We aren't just looking for shock value, but it is important to catch our attention with something memorable. Videos will be judged on creativity as well.  Anyone appearing in the videos must be at lest 18 years of age, and if your video is chosen you will be required to sign a release form & provide proof of age!

So there you have it, all we want is a minute of your time, save a trip to the fridge, record a sweet video, and be in a Movie!!!

Send your submissions right HERE and make sure your subject line states ZOMBIE VID

More Summer Reading
"Don Of The Dead" By Nick Cato

Picture
We have more summer reading coming your way!

This time its Don of the Dead by newcomer Nick Cato.  This is Nick's first novel, but he doesn't disappoint!

Mafia families, killer dogs, guns, tanks, Zombies, and oh so much more!

Here's the plot:

Two mob families go to war after one family’s main hitman switches sides--and to show his newfound loyalty, he has to whack his former boss, who also happens to be the current Don. The Don is buried alive on a mob-controlled construction site that was once the location of a church that had banned the same Don’s ancestors, causing them to invent their own religion.

The Barrlucio and Piranzza families battle for control of the underworld before their main henchmen find out a Don has been offed without permission. Major problems arise when a group of mysterious Sicilians arrive from Italy and manage to retrieve the Don’s corpse.

Well, his living corpse.

Before long, the Don’s undead state leads to the outbreak of reanimated dead, including a showdown at the Staten Island Mall and NYC’s Central Park. Add to the mix a corrupt military general that is bent on using the outbreak to bring down the mob and the entire city and an even more corrupt Catholic priest who is responsible for the whole mess in the first place.

Ah, nothing like a few bowls of scungilli, classy suits, bullets and zombies.

We'll be interviewing Nick in the next few days so keep an eye out for that, and in the meantime pick up a copy of  Nick's book on AMAZON

Dead Rising 2 Cover Art Released
Europe Treated To "Outbreak Pack" Exclusive

Picture
With the recent delay in the release date of Dead Rising 2 Capcom has released the cover art for the game.

The game is set 5 years after the events of the original Dead Rising. The zombie parasite that originated in Santa Cabeza and caused the Willamette outbreak has spread all over the United States. This is due to the 50 orphans scattered throughout the United States who had been injected with the parasite, subjecting them to zombification and infecting the rest of the US. The game will take place in the fictional setting of Fortune City, the games version of Las Vegas!

You can expect to create your won weapons in this one, and it looks like the 800 Zombies you can face at one time in the original has been increased a bit....to 6000!  Yea, we're all gonna die!

And just to smack the US fans in the face Capcom has announced a "Outbreak Pack" to be released exclusively in Europe! (Pic Below)

The limited edition Outbreak Pack - released alongside the standard edition - will feature a highly detailed 12" zombie figurine complete with accessories, a download token for a bonus theme pack, plus additional specific content for the PS3 and 360 versions!

Guest Review
"Dead Tide" By Stephen A North

Picture
New review up today from Special Guest Colleen Wanglund!

Colleen recently checked out Dead Tide by Stephen North.

Here's the plot:

St. Petersburg and Pinellas Park are two cities on a peninsula of Florida's west coast. With the Gulf of Mexico on one side and Tampa Bay on the other, evacuation choices are few, even when a proper warning is given. This is no place to be when a major disaster strikes and the power goes out.

The general population receives no warning of the impending doom about to wash over them. The dead are coming back to life, filled with a single-minded urge to devour the living.

While the power was on, some people followed the bigger picture on television, but the news media is little more than a chronicler of the disaster. Sadly, most people are better at becoming part of the problem than finding a way to solve it.

"The most important question becomes: Are there enough resilient survivors left to stem the rising dead tide of humanity?"

You can check out what Colleen thought about this one right HERE, and if you like what you see you can pick up a copy on AMAZON

Lots Of New Casting News
AMC's "The Walking Dead"

Picture
With filming for Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead well underway we are being overwhelmed by casting news! A few relative newcomers and a few vets being added to the cast, it also looks like AMC is adding new characters we were not introduced to in the comics, I guess we'll just have to see if that's a good or bad thing!

On a little disturbing note, it looks like Frank Darabont will only be directing the Pilot episode, he will however be consulting on the others.

Now on to the Casting news!

Sarah Wayne Callies (Prison Break, House) has been hast to play Lori Grimes
Chandler Riggs (The Wronged Man) has been cast to play Carl Grimes
Emma Bell (Frozen, Supernatural) has been cast as a yet unnamed character (Amy, Andreas sister?)
Jim Coleman (Law & Order) has been cast to play a new character Lambert Kendall
Keith Allen Hayes (The Blind Side) has been cast as an undisclosed character for now (Tyreese?)
Steve Warren (ZombieLand) has been cast as a Zombie
Addy Miller (The Secret Life Of Bees) has been cast as a Little Zombie Girl
IronE Singleton (The Blind Side) has been cast as a new character named T-Dog

No huge names, but that's not always a bad thing!

We'll keep you updated as more news becomes available!

Star Wars "Death Troopers"
By Joe Schreiber

Picture
Last week we brought you news on a Star Trek Zombie book and this week we bring you Star Wars!

Author Joe Schreiber brings us Death Troopers!

When the Imperial prison barge Purge–temporary home to five hundred of the galaxy’s most ruthless killers, rebels, scoundrels, and thieves–breaks down in a distant, uninhabited part of space, its only hope appears to lie with a Star Destroyer found drifting, derelict, and seemingly abandoned. But when a boarding party from the Purge is sent to scavenge for parts, only half of them come back–bringing with them a horrific disease so lethal that within hours nearly all aboard the Purge die in ways too hideous to imagine.

And death is only the beginning.

The Purge’s half-dozen survivors–two teenage brothers, a sadistic captain of the guards, a couple of rogue smugglers, and the chief medical officer, the lone woman on board–will do whatever it takes to stay alive. But nothing can prepare them for what lies waiting aboard the Star Destroyer amid its vast creaking emptiness that isn’t really empty at all. For the dead are rising: soulless, unstoppable, and unspeakably hungry.

"Night Of The Living Dead Origins"
Romero's Classic Re-Envisioned in CG

Picture
In 1968 George A. Romero released the groundbreaking film Night of the Living Dead. In 1999 the movie was recognized as a cultural classic and was preserved by the Library of Congress in the National Film Registry.  Director Zebediah De Soto has recreated the classic in a new fully 3D animated style that de Soto refers to as “American style anime.” The movie was filmed with a new proprietary real-time effects system nick-named “the beast,” which allows the director to film the CG animations as though he were on a live set. De Soto brings the chaos and fear of real world disasters to the big screen by taking the zombies out of the rural mid-western town and into the densely populated city of New York. In De Soto’s reenvisioning, subtitled “origins”, there is more focus on the back stories to the characters, with emphasis on the hopes, dreams, and loved ones lost amidst the chaos of the zombie apocalypse.

With names like Danielle HarrisTony Todd, and Bill Moseley on board to voice characters this one looks like it may be worth a watch!
No release date has been announced.  Check out their FACEBOOK page!

Story

New York, a city of the hopes and dreams for many Americans, lies in ruin. The streets and skyscrapers that symbolized the strength and prosperity of a people have become places of horror and despair. The cultural hub of the western world is now home to only ash and blood. For the few people left alive there is only one dream – Survival. Zombies, the living dead, have taken the city. Ben (Tony Todd) and Barbra (Danielle Harris) find themselves trapped and fighting to escape the hordes of undead that walk the streets.

Picture
I guess it don't really matter where you go these days Zombies are everywhere!

USA Today writer Brian Truitt recently wrote an article on the man himself, George A. Romero!

It's a very good read, check it out right HERE

"Here's how to freak out Romero: Tell the horror icon and grandfather of all zombie films that there's a guy waiting for him with a blank slate of arm skin for Romero's autograph so it can be turned into a tattoo.

"Yikes," Romero says, his eyes flashing hints of horror. Yet he smiles as he admits that, no, he doesn't sign skin. Ever. "I've seen people with bodies covered with beautiful, wonderfully rendered illustrations of scenes from my movies. It's like, wow, what if you grow up and decide you hate that movie?""

The British Zombie Invasion
"Paul Is Undead" By Alan Goldsher

Picture
The Beatles are back baby!  And their Deader then ever!

For John Lennon, a young, idealistic zombie guitarist with dreams of global domination, Liverpool seems the ideal place to form a band that could take over the world. In an inspired act, Lennon kills and reanimates local rocker Paul McCartney, kicking off an unstoppable partnership. With the addition of newly zombified guitarist George Harrison and drummer/Seventh Level Ninja Lord Ringo Starr, the Beatles soon cut a swath of bloody good music and bloody violent mayhem across Europe, America, and the entire planet.

In this searing oral history, discover how the Fab Four climbed to the Toppermost of the Poppermost while stealing the hearts, ears, and brains of smitten teenage girls. Learn the tale behind a spiritual journey that resulted in the dismemberment of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Marvel at the seemingly indestructible quartet’s survival of a fierce attack by Eighth Level Ninja Lord Yoko Ono. And find out how the boys escaped eternal death at the hands of England’s greatest zombie hunter, Mick Jagger.

Through all this, one mystery remains: Can the Beatles sublimate their hunger for gray matter, remain on top of the charts, and stay together for all eternity? After all, three of the Fab Four are zombies, and zombies live forever. . . .

New Zombie Book Coming At Ya
"Play Dead" By Ryan Brown

Picture
What's this?  A book that combines two of my favorite things?  Zombies and Football!  How can it go wrong!

For the first time in Killington High School history, the Jackrabbits football team is one win away from the district championship where it will face its most vicious rival, the Elmwood Heights Badgers. On the way to the game, the Jackrabbits’s bus plunges into a river, killing every player except for bad-boy quarterback Cole Logan who is certain the crash was no accident—given that Cole himself was severely injured in a brutal attack by three ski-masked men earlier that day. Bent on payback, Cole turns to a mysterious fan skilled in black magic to resurrect his teammates. But unless the undead Jackrabbits defeat their murderous rival on the field, the team is destined for hell. In a desperate race against time, with only his coach’s clever daughter, Savannah Hickman, to assist him, Cole must lead his zombie team to victory

. . . in a final showdown where the stakes aren’t just life or death—but damnation or salvation. Boundlessly imaginative and thrillingly satisfying, Play Dead gives small-town Texas an electrifying jolt of the supernatural, and is unquestioningly The Zombie Novel of the Year!

George A. Romero's "Survival Of The Dead"
In Theaters Today May 28th

Picture
The wait is finally over!  George A. Romero's Survival of the Dead hits theaters today!

Most of have most likely already seen it at home, but nothing beats seeing Zombies on the Big Screen!

Check out Magnolia Pictures for all theater info and hope on over to the official Survival SITE for all the movie details and trailer!

Like most of Romero's Zombie films Survival of the Dead  takes place in a desperate, nightmarish world where the dead walk the earth, relentlessly attacking the living. It is the story of Plum Island - a beautiful refuge whose isolation allows two powerful families to maintain a semblance of order in the wake of the zombie holocaust. But as the inhabitants slowly die off, the two clans become sharply divided: The O'Flynns believe that the undead must be destroyed without exception, while the Muldoons insist that afflicted loved ones be kept "alive" until a cure is found. The result is an escalating showdown with echoes of a classic Western stand-off that erupts in brutality and violence.

Taurus Entertainment 3D Remake
George A. Romero's "Day of the Dead"

Picture
Be afraid......Be very afraid!

James Dudelson, Ana Clavell, & Taurus Entertainment are bringing us a 3D remake of Romero's Day of the Dead.

Before we get too excited, these are the same folks that brought us Day of the Dead 2: Contagium. (Ugh)

The movie is currently under production, no release date has yet been announced.

Dudelson said many buyers have requested 3D conversions of classic 2D movies because "3D works well for certain genres, like horror." But, he cautioned, "You can't just slap a 3D conversion on the wrong type of film."

Why o why do they have to mess with Zombie movies!  If it ain't broke........

The Evil Dead Coming To Blu-Ray
Ash Never Looked This Good

Picture
While many purists may not consider The Evil Dead to be a true Zombie movie you cant to wrong with Ash!

Written and directed by Sam Raimi, The Evil Dead is a story of five college students vacationing in an isolated cabin in a wooded area. Their vacation becomes gruesome when they find an audiotape that releases evil spirits.

In the summer of 1979 a group of Detroit friends with $375,000 raised from local investors headed for a cabin outside of Morristown, Tennessee, to make the film. The filmmakers' goal was to create the ultimate experience in grueling terror, a movie so relentless that it would stand forever as a landmark in modern horror history. When it was released in 1982, it was immediately recognized worldwide as one of the most ferociously original films ever made.  Some countries considered it so bad they banned it!  One of those countries kinda jumps out at ya considering their own sketchy past, I'm looking at you Germany!

Starz/Anchor Bay Entertainment has confirmed an August 31st Blu-ray release, better get in line now!

"A zombie movie is the film equivalent of cotton candy, not much mental nutritional value, but when done well, oh so sweet. But the zombie movement has more to say about Western culture than you might expect."

What they find inside lies beyond the scope of medical science — a demonic nightmare of Biblical proportions more terrifying than they could have possibly imagined. Above all it must be contained, before it escapes to wreak havoc on the unsuspecting world outside.

New "Survival Of The Dead" Poster
Courtesy Of "The Walking Dead" Artist Charlie Adlard

Picture
The Walking Dead hits the big screen!  Stop salivating, its not what you think!

Dead comic book artist Charlie Ward put his spin on George A. Romero's latest Zombie tale Survival Of The Dead with a kick ass new poster!

Survival is currently available on Video On Demand, Xbox Live, Playstation Network, and Amazon.  And for those lucky enough to get it, select Movie Theaters will begin showing it on May 28th!

Immediately following Diary Of The Dead, Survival is the sixth film from Romero to look at the world after a Zombie Apocalypse.

Off the coast of Delaware sits the cozy Plum Island where two families are locked in a struggle for power, as it has been for generations.  The O'Flynn's, headed by patriarch Patrick O'Flynn approach the zombie plague with a shoot-to-kill attitude.  The Muldoons, headed by Shamus Muldoon, feel that the zombies should be quarantined and kept 'alive,' in hopes that a solution will someday be found.

The O'Flynn's, who are clearly outnumbered, are forced to exile Patrick by boat to the mainland, where he meets up with a band of soldiers, headed by Guardsman Sarge. They join forces and return to the island, to find that the zombie plague has fully gripped the divided community.

George A. Romero's Survival Of The Dead
US Release April 30th

Picture
After waiting for what seemed like forever Survival Of The Dead finally makes its presence Stateside tomorrow April 30th!

Look for it on Video On Demand, Xbox Live, Playstation Network, and Amazon.

If your one of the lucky few it will also be hitting a theater near you on May 28th!

Check out the trailer right HERE and make sure your watching tomorrow!

What did kind of surprise me was its opponent in the final round, 1992's Army Of Darkness staring the the chainsaw toting Ash, not exactly know as a top contender in the Zombie genre.

Zombie Fight Night: Battles Of The Dead
New Book From A.P. Fuchs

Picture
Zombies fight Bigfoot, werewolves, vampires, Axiom-man, Bruce Lee, samurai, kickboxers, robots and more in this ode to blood-and-guts action from Blood of the Dead author, A.P. Fuchs.

What?!?!?  Its like Fight Club with the Undead!  Sounds like this could be an interesting read.

In 2027 A.D., the Zombie Apocalypse took the world by storm and no one was prepared. Countless lives were lost as humanity battled to regain control of their planet. Eventually, they did, and out of the ashes of fallen civilization rose a new world, one bent on revenge against the hordes of the undead that took everything from them. Enter Tony Sterpanko, entrepreneur extraordinaire who found a way to capitalize on humanity's thirst for vengeance against the zombie. He created Zombie Fight Night, a worldwide craze where the undead men and women who remained from the apocalypse faced off against people and beings that once existed on Earth or were existing for the first time. It is ten years later and at Blood Bay Arena, fortunes are won and lost. Men are made millionaires over night. Others are not so lucky and find themselves broken and destitute. Mick Chelsey is one such man: gambling addict, lousy husband and Zombie Fight Night fanatic. Except now, in order to still watch the fights and try to win back all he's lost, he needs to bet fast and big otherwise death will come for him. Let the battles begin.

Bring it on!  A.P. will be sitting down with The Hoard for an Interview so look for that in the next few days!

You can pick this one up on Amazon right now for $15!

After Dark Originals Brings Us Re-Kill
Slated for 2010 Release

Picture
From the folks behind After Dark HorrorFest, 8 Films To Die For, we are introduced to a new venture After Dark Originals.

Not much is listed on their new SITE, but we do know that a Zombie movie will be part of their initial offerings!

Re-Kill is slated for a 2010 release, the one sheet poster was just released along with a plot.

Five years after the Outbreak, a zombie menace is supposed to be waning. But the brave men and women of R-Division, who find and destroy the undead, are seeing signs of a second Outbreak which humanity may not survive. The footage about the men and women of R-Division and their grim, dangerous but essential job of exterminating re-animated humans, was shot the week previous by an embedded journalist during a long, deadly day. Only the film survived.

Sounds interesting, look for this one to be filmed in the same aspect as REC and Paranormal Activity.

A Zombie Novel By Lorne Dixon

Picture
And the Zombie books just keep on comin!

Remember High School?  For some of us it was a blast, for others not so much, but I can guarantee you these kids have it worst then all of us!

A school full of kids. A mysterious yellow rain. High school will never be the same. They are outcasts and misfits, teenagers lost on the path to adulthood, living day-to-day inside a high school culture of taunts, humiliation, and isolation. They are the misunderstood, the neglected, and the abused. They are . . . The Lifeless. For them, every school day is a nightmare. But on Monday, October 2nd, they will discover the true meaning of terror. Classes are cut short by news of explosions in the city across the river, part of a series of horrific terrorist attacks that paralyze the nation. But that is only the beginning: amber clouds fill the sky, burning rain pelts down, and the surviving students of Verlaine High learn that their tormentors have mutated into something far worse-reanimated corpses with a primordial instinct for murder. It's time to stand up to the in-crowd . . . or be consumed by it.

Lorne was awesome enough to sit down with The Zombie Hoard for an interview, we'll have it posted in a few days!

New REC2 Movie Trailer
Courtesy Of IGN

Picture
REC 2 is a Spanish Horror Film that is the sequel to 2007's REC. Written and directed by Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza, both of whom returned from the previous film, the story takes place immediately after the events of the first film, with producing company Filmax International describing it as having "the same claustrophobic concept" as REC but with "new means of transferring fear from the screen to the spectator through the recording lens."

Magnolia Pictures acquired the rights for the US market and will be releasing the movie to theaters and Video On Demand in July with an expected October release date for the DVD. REC 3 has also been announced to be in the works so stay tuned for more info on that one!

But for now you can check out the REC2 Trailer courtesy of IGN.

Zombie Hoard Sits Down With Shaun Jeffrey
Author Of The New Zombie Book "Deadfall"

Picture
Shaun Jeffrey the Author behind Evilution, The Kult, and now Deadfall was kind enough to sit down with us and give us some dirt on the life he calls his own!

BIOGRAPHY

I was born in 1965 and live in Cheshire, England with my partner, Debra and our fantastic son, Callum. Growing up in a house in a cemetery, my playground was the graveyard - perfect grounding for writing horror, and my early reading experience came from headstones! I have had over 40 short stories published, one collection entitled Voyeurs of Death, and two novels, Evilution and The Kult.  An Active member of the HWA, I try to write most days, but as it's not my full time profession, I'm afraid real life intervenes in the form of my day job, which is working on the railway as a Signaling and Telecommunication Engineer. Among my previous jobs, I've been a fitness instructor, made ammunition, and worked in a food factory, all of which gives me experience upon which to draw, or write, as the case may be.

De Masticatione Mortuorum -- Latin -- “On the Chewing Dead”
1679 Manuscript Written By Philip Rohr

Picture
Could Zombies have been a worry for people as early as the 1600's?  This manuscript may provide some answers!

De Masticatione Mortuorum, translated from Latin as “On the Chewing Dead,” is an aged manuscript written in 1679 by Philip Rohr. The 330-year-old text discusses a common fear of the time: that some human corpses were capable of rising from the dead and feasting on the flesh of the living.

Here is a sample manuscript excerpt translated from its original Latin to English.

Our Common People attempt to avert the danger of chewing by placing under the chins of the dead a portion of recently excavated earth, lest they perhaps open their mouths and chew on the attached bands...

Others, who do not consider this a sufficiently safe measure, before the mouth of the dead is closed, also place a stone and a coin in the mouth, so that in the event that it begins to chew within the grave, it would find the stone and coin and would abstain from chewing.

Creepy!  Read the rest of the story right HERE

AMC's Series The Walking Dead Casts First Role
Jon Bernthal To Play Shane, Lead Characters Best Friend

Picture

From those of you not yet in the know The Walking Dead is based on the on-going comic book series by Robert Kirkman. It follows Grimes, a police officer who awakens from a coma to a zombie apocalypse. He sets out with other survivors to find his family and a safe haven from the Undead.

James Cheetham
Bio Of A Zombie Guru

Picture
As most of you know by now, we here at The Hoard are doing a feature on Writer/Artist/Guru James Cheetham this month!  And as part of that feature we give you a chance to get to know him a little better, below you will find a biography of the man behind the Books, the Zombie Cookies, the Zombie Art.....

And if the Bio just isnt enough to get your fix we've interviewed Mr. Cheetham and will be posting said interview within the next few days!

James Cheetham has spent his entire life on the Canadian prairies growing up in Manitoba where the winters last forever. He spent many a blizzard enthralled in horror movies and books, hunkered down while the elements outside had their way. He now resides on an acreage near Bird’s Hill Park with his wife Tanya and daughter Stephanie.

Cheetham was working at a maximum security prison as a Corrections Officer, most of that time spent working on the psychiatric ward of the institution. It was there where many of his ideas for stories were born.

His first novel, Fade To Pale has developed a cult following. Cocktail Reviews calls Fade To Pale “psychologically acute and entertaining, dark and inspiring, deeply personal and universally appealing all at the same time”. It also won Best Horror Novel of 2007 at Preditors and Editors.

His short story The Beekeeper was released in an anthology called Weirdly: A Collection of Strange Stories. Said of The Beekeeper: “A literary feel to this one, and immensely enjoyable if you like tales with a deeper meaning. With a hint of creepiness and other worldly-ness, I’ll remember this tale forever.” The Beekeeper won Best Short Horror of 2007 at Preditors and Editors.

Cheetham was also voted SNM Magazine's 2008 author of the year. SNM published two of Cheetham's stories in two separate anthologies. The Wilting May Flowers was published in Bonded By Blood, and Bumper Shine was published in Bonded By Blood II: Romance in Red. In January of 2010 SNM also published Frost on the Pane.

Cheetham's unpublished zombie series Seasons of The Brittle Harvest has spawned a website where people can have their photos turned into zombies and placed on Tshirts. This venture also spawned a collaboration with Myphotocookie.com and Eric Maciejkow and James released an onslaught of Personalized Zombie Cookies upon the Halloween world. Word is, Halloween of 2010 will be no different.

The zombies have also taken to the road along with Photographer Doug Ritter, their last stop, the Minneapolis Crypticon in 2009.

Cheetham is the co-creator of The Dark Fiction Guild, along with fellow writer Garth Von Buchholz, was recently interviewed for the 200th anniversary of Edgar Allan Poe along with Alan Parsons and Michael Connelley, and is the creator of Unconventional Interviews, a website dedicated to uncovering the thoughts of people who live on the fringe of society.

James Cheetham is expected to become one of Canada's rare examples of fine Horror fiction.

Dont  forget about our contest!  Send me an Email and let me know why you think James should turn you into a Zombie!  Anyone Can Enter!

Zombieland's Abigail Breslin
Ready to Tackle Darker Roles

Picture
Former "Little Miss Sunshine" star Abigail Breslin, currently bringing tears to the eyes of Broadway theater audiences as the blind and deaf Helen Keller, has a grown-up message for movie scouts. She's ready for much darker roles.

Serious horror films, to be precise. Or, suggests Breslin, perhaps a meaty role such as Lady Jane Grey, who as a teenager ruled England for a brief period before being beheaded.

"I am obsessed with horror movies," Breslin, now aged 13, said in an interview near the theater where she has garnered critical praise for a convincing Broadway debut as a distressed 6-year-old Keller in "The Miracle Worker."

"I would love to do a 'Scream'-type movie."

This may come as a surprise to audiences who warmed to Breslin as bespectacled and adorable aspiring beauty pageant queen Olive Hoover in the 2006 film, "Little Miss Sunshine".

Fans also know her for "Zombieland" (2009) and sci-fi thriller "Signs," her first movie at the age of five.

Assuming she returns to the undead subgenre for Zombieland 2, here's hoping the 13-year-old Breslin (seen below in a scene from the original with co-star Emma Stone) is able to convince the powers-that-be to infuse a bit more of that "darkness" she's ready for into the sequel.

Dead Rising 2
August 31st, 2010 Release Date

Picture
Dead Rising 2 is an upcoming survival Zombie video game with action adventure and role playing game elements. The game is the sequel to the 2006 video game Dead Rising. It is being developed, in partnership with Dead Rising developer Capcom, by Blue Castle Games and will be distributed by Capcom. Original Dead Rising team members will return to create the game, including Keiji Inafune, head of Research & Development at Capcom. Originally set to be released in the beginning of 2010, the game has been delayed to release August 31st 2010 for the Xbox 360, PS 3, and Windows platforms.

PLOT

The game is set a few years after the events of the original Dead Rising. The zombie parasite that originated in Santa Cabeza and caused the Willamette outbreak has spread all over the United States. The game will take place in the fictional city of Fortune City, which is modeled after the real-life city of Las Vegas.  Chuck Greene, a former national motocross champion, is somehow caught in the middle of the Zombie apocalypse in Fortune City. Just like Frank West (the player-character from the original Dead Rising), Chuck must survive through every zombie horde he gets into as well as psychopaths and rescue surviving civilians. Among the survivors is Chuck's own daughter, which serves as his primary motivation for battling the undead.  Inafune mentioned in an interview that part of Chuck's quest will force him to participate in the violent game show, "Terror is Reality".

From what I've see so far this one looks to be a hack and slash Zombie game, with tons of cool weapons and some good graphics this one might turn out pretty good!

Come chat about it in our FORUMS

Ugly Americans
Comedy Central's New Animated Series

Picture
Ugly Americans is a new animated horror-comedy series premiering on Comedy Central on March 17 at 10:30pm.

The series follows Mark Lilly, a social worker at the "Department of Integration," as he helps new citizens, both human and "other," adapt to hectic life in New York City. There are easier tasks than weaning vampires off blood, socializing land-whales and housebreaking werewolves, but Mark is up to the challenge. Between his stressful job, a zombie roommate and a demon girlfriend, Mark's lucky if he can sneak in a few minutes of sleep. But who can sleep when there's a drop-dead gorgeous mermaid sitting at the bar?

In addition to Mark Lilly, the Ugly Americans cast features Randall Skeffington, Mark's zombie roommate (voiced by Kurt Metzger), Callie Maggotbone, Mark's demon boss and office fling (voiced by Natasha Leggero), Leonard Powers, an aging drunken wizard (voiced by Randy Pearlstein), Twayne, a terrorizing demonic bureaucrat (voiced by Michael-Leon Wooley) and Lt. Grimes (voiced by Larry Murphy), a law-enforcement officer who despises non-humans. Additional characters are voiced by Mike Britt, Devin Clark, Pete Holmes and Julie Klausner.

The debut episode introduces lead character and "Department of Integration" (D.O.I.) agent Mark Lilly dealing with aggressive sexual advances from his demon boss Callie, while trying to do his work finding jobs for the city's newest citizens. Lilly is also developing a reluctant friendship with his zombie roommate Randall, who he found on Craig's List, as well as battling rival Grimes and his thug squad, who are apprehending "illegals" to fill a quota. Future episodes feature Mark counseling a young woman who wants to become a vampire and Callie going baby-crazy after Mark starts fostering a demon orphan.

Taking the form of a biologist's illustrated journal found in the aftermath of the attack, this pulse-pounding, suspenseful tale of zombie apocalypse follows the narrator as he flees from city to countryside and heads north to Canada, where—he hopes—the undead will be slowed by the colder climate. Encountering scattered humans and scores of the infected along the way, he fills his notebook with graphic drawings of the zombies and careful observations of their behavior, along with terrifying tales of survival. This frightening new contribution to the massively popular zombie resurgence will keep fans on the edge of their seats right up to the very end.

This book reads like a research journal, with lots of great personal experiences and illustrations!

AMC's The Walking Dead
Casting Rumors

Picture
As most of you already know AMC has picked up Robert Kirkmans The Walking Dead and will be turning it into a TV Series.  With filming scheduled for May there are a few possible casting rumors making their way around the interwebs!

The latest rumor surrounds the lead male role of Rick Grimes, a small-town police officer from Cynthiana, Kentucky.

Names being tossed around are Jamie Bamber (Battlestar Gallactica), Mark Pellegrino (Dexter), and Stuart Townsend (Queen of the Damned).  None of these guys are huge stars, but all are more than capable of playing Rick.  Based on looks alone I'd put my vote in for Mark Pellegrino!

ZombieLand
The TV Series?

Picture
You might not realize it, but long before there was a "Zombieland" hit movie, there was nearly a “Zombieland” TV series.

Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writers behind Zombieland and its upcoming sequel, originally conceived the Zombieland universe as a TV show.

We always thought [it should be a TV series],” Reese added, saying that the duo have pages of still-unused ideas at this point, waiting to be dusted off for future Zombieland storylines. “If you watch the movie with that in mind, you will see some remnants of the television show. We have the ‘Zombie Kill of the Week,’ which was always intended to happen every week. The movie ends on a cliffhanger; it doesn’t have a real resolution. [The movie’s ending] is just our guys driving off into the sunset for some new adventures. That’s because that’s how the television pilot ended.

Brains, A Zombie Memoir
Releases May 25, 2010

Picture
Forget contemporary American literature--former college professor Jack Barnes has a new passion: Brains. It’s in his nature…he’s a zombie.
But he’s not your normal, vacant-eyed, undead idiot. No, Jack Barnes has something most other victims of the zombie apocalypse don’t have: sentience. In fact, he can even write.
And the story he has to tell is a truly disturbing--yet strangely heartwarming--one.

Convinced he’ll bring about a peaceful coexistence between zombies and humans if he can demonstrate his unique condition to the man responsible for the zombie virus, Howard Stein, Barnes sets off on a grueling cross-country journey to meet his maker. Along the way he meets more like him, rotting brain-eaters who have retained some sort of cognitive ability, and soon forms a small army that will stop at nothing to reach their goal. There’s Guts, the agile, dread-locked boy who can run like the wind; Joan, the matronly nurse adept at re-attaching rotting appendages; Annie, the young girl with a fierce quick-draw; and Ros, who can actually speak coherent sentences. Together they make their way through an eerie new world of roving zombie hunters, empty McMansions, and clogged highways on a quest to attain what all men, women--and apparently zombies--yearn for: equality.

This one sounds like it may be worth checking out, a different spin on the Zombie Mythology.

Brains: A Zombie Memoir, by Robin Becker,  will be released on May 25, 2010 by HarperCollins.

Rock Of The Dead
Kill Zombies With Your Guitar Hero Guitar

Picture
Wait.....What?!?!?!?

Thats right chalk this one up for the "Why didn't anyone think of this before?" department. There are several million Guitar Hero and Rock Band guitars out in active use on the Nintendo Wii, and Rock Of The Dead targets those guitar owners with something that's not just a music game.

There are mindless beasts that take basic three- or four-strum combos to take out, but then there are ones that'll lob projectiles at you – these knives/bombs only take a couple of fret flicks to get rid of, but unless you take down the guy that's throwing them out at you, you'll just be endlessly downing those objects. When the screen fills with a half-dozen beasts at once, you have the ability to discriminate and target specific ones by "typing" out the combo of the one you want – the game's smart enough to know which beast you're "aiming" at because it locks in on the enemy as you're pushing out its fret button code.

Periodically you'll have to take down larger enemies in rhythm fashion: this is basic Guitar Hero/Rock Band gameplay as the notes must be played to the beat of the background music to take down the threat.

You can play on the basic Easy or Normal difficulty and still get a good challenge, but the true Guitar Hero rockers will probably want to hit Rock of the Dead's Hard or Expert mode that'll enable all the fret buttons and bring up the multi-button chords. There's stock controller contingency plan in place if Nintendo doesn't allow for the game to require the peripheral, but as of this writing, you'll need a guitar for Rock of the Dead.

Looks like the main character is voiced by..... Wait For It ..... Neil Patrick Harris!  Legendary!

Nintendo is shooting for a Third Quarter release of this one, running around $30 - $40 bucks!

The Walking Dead
AMC TV Series Gets Start Date

Picture
A few weeks ago we told you that AMC had officially picked up the rights to turn Robert Kirkmans legendary zombie tale The Walking Dead into a TV Series, well it looks like AMC has announced that a May 15 start date has been locked for the pilot episode.  Shooting will take place in Atlanta, GA.

The Walking Dead is centered on Rick Grimes, a small-town police officer from Cynthiana, Kentucky, his family, and a number of other survivors who have banded together in order to survive after the world is overrun with zombies. As the series progresses, the characters become more developed, and their personalities shift under the stress of a zombie apocalypse. Fighting growing despair — and sometimes each other — the group searches for a secure location which they can finally call home.

ZombieTown
The Board Game

Picture
Welcome to ZombieTown!

ZombieTown released in 2007 drops you in the middle of the action as you rush around to gather supplies and rescue survivors. Oh, and you might want to avoid the living dead as they rise from the conveniently located cemetery in the middle of town.

Help is coming in ten days. The real question is...will you last that long?

The dead are rising from the graveyard which is conveniently located in the middle of your residential neighborhood. There is no way out of the neighborhood, so you must scrounge as much stuff (weapons, barricades, survivors, etc.) from your neighbors to survive until help arrives. The game lasts for 10 days, and by the 10th day the neighborhood is filled with zombies (to say the least) and your neighbors are no longer your friends.
"Oh sure, buy the house next to the cemetery," they said.
"What are you afraid of?" they said. "You don't expect the dead to get up anytime soon, do you?"
It seemed like a good idea at the time.
Then the murders started.
"There's no such thing as zombies," they said.
They were WRONG!
Now your days are filled with frantic running from house to house gathering plywood, ammunition, food...whatever you can find. Sometimes, you even have to rescue some of the people who gave you such good advice to begin with.
No such thing as zombies...YEAH RIGHT!

Left 4 Dead 2 Getting Add On
"The Passing"

Picture
“The Passing” Brings L4D1 Survivors Down South!

Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress, and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), announced the first game add-on for its co-operative zombie thriller, Left 4 Dead 2 (L4D2), is in development and targeted for release in early 2010.

Dubbed “The Passing,” the first game add-on for L4D2 brings the original Left 4 Dead (L4D1) Survivors down south for a meeting with the L4D2 cast, while delivering new single-player, multiplayer and co-operative gameplay for the PC and Xbox 360.

Targeted for release in early spring, “The Passing” takes place just after the Dead Center campaign of L4D2. Set in a small town in rural Georgia, players assume the role of the L4D2 Survivors as they meet with the L4D1 characters.

In addition to the new co-operative campaign and associated narrative, “The Passing” will include new arenas for Survival, Versus and Scavenge mode and introduce a new co-operative challenge mode of play. The Passing will also include a new “uncommon common” zombie class, melee weapon, and firearm.

“The Passing will become the most important campaign in the Left 4 Dead story, as all the Survivors are being called together in one campaign,” said Doug Lombardi, VP of marketing at Valve. “It will also be a huge offering of new gameplay content, with something new for every game mode plus a new uncommon common and weaponry.”

Exclusively available for the Xbox 360 and PC, L4D2 sets a new benchmark for co-operative action games. The title adds melee combat to enable deeper co-operative gameplay, with items such as a chainsaws, frying pans, axes, baseball bats, and more.

With the AI Director 2.0, L4D’s dynamic gameplay is taken to the next level by giving the Director the ability to procedurally change weather effects, world objects, and pathways in addition to tailoring the enemy population, effects, and sounds to match the players’ performance. The result is a unique game session custom fitted to provide a satisfying and uniquely challenging experience each time the game is played.

Finally, with new Survivors, boss zombies, weapons, and items, Left 4 Dead 2 offers a much larger game than the original, featuring more co-operative campaigns, more Versus campaigns, new Survival maps, and the new competitive game mode, Scavenge.

Left 4 Dead 2: The Passing is targeted for release in early spring for the PC and Xbox 360. Pricing will be announced closer to launch.

Happy Birthday George, keep those Zombie movies coming!

25th Anniversary Edition
Day of the Dead

Picture
Good news for Zombie fans in the United Kingdom, this March, Arrow Video celebrates the 25th Anniversary of writer-director George A. Romero’s 1985 horror masterpiece, Day Of The Dead, with a special two-disc Blu-ray release in the UK that features a host of world exclusive extras, including a restored presentation of the film, a new hi-def soundtrack (the original ‘uncensored dialogue’ version, completely restored), four alternate sleeves, a double-sided poster, a 24-page collector’s booklet ‘For Every Dawn There Is A Day’, plus a very special collector’s comic – ‘Day Of The Dead: Desertion’ – featuring a brand new ‘Bub’ storyline. Also after years of Dawn of the Dead getting all the great documentaries Day finally gets the retrospective it deserves with the all-new Joe of the Dead and Travelogue of the Dead.

Specially commissioned for this 25th Anniversary Blu-ray release of Day Of The Dead, the world exclusive 24-page comic ‘Day Of The Day: Desertion’ is written by ‘Hack/Slash Meets Re-Animator’ co-writer, Barry Keating, and ‘Halloween: Nightdance’ creator, Stefan Hutchinson, with artwork by ‘Halloween: The First Death of Laurie Strode’ illustrator Jeff Zornow. The storyline recounts the dark and disturbing origins of Day Of The Dead’s iconic zombie, Bub. Only available as part of this Blu-ray release, ‘Day Of The Dead: Desertion’ is just one of the many features that makes this release the one, must-have edition of Day Of The Dead for fans and collectors worldwide.

The Day of the Dead Blu-ray was developed in conjunction with the members of Cult Labs - a forum where film distributors interested in fan opinions spend time getting their expert feedback. One of the artwork options included in the packaging - the triple layer Night/Dawn/Day of the Dead poster was their most popular alternate choice. The main artwork is an all-new oil painting commissioned from artist Rick Melton.

In this, the third instalment in Romero’s ongoing zombie saga, the living dead have now taken over the world and only small pockets of human resistance survive. One such group of desperate survivors, a motley crew of scientists and soldiers, are holed up in a 14-mile long underground missile silo. As the scientists experiment on forcibly captured zombie specimens to try and find a way to control them, the soldiers become increasingly impatient with the lack of results and are eager to wage an all-out war on the undead. Soon, the tension between the two human camps erupts into a violent situation that is only overshadowed by the vicious zombie slaughter that surrounds them.

Easily the bleakest, goriest and most chilling of Romero’s zombie movies to date, Day Of The Dead sees Tom Savini and his special effects team hitting an all-time career high with an endless succession of super-realistic flesh tearing, bone snapping, gut spilling mayhem that for some viewers will prove almost too much to endure. The setting within a seemingly endless series of underground caverns adds an unbearable tension to a movie that is still as shockingly violent and claustrophobic today as it was twenty-five years ago.

Two all-new documentaries were commissioned for this epic release. In Joe of the Dead (directed by Calum Waddell) actor Joe Pilato talks about his career in movies - beginning with his work in the little-seen Pittsburgh horror outing Effects (which also featured Romero regulars Tom Savini and John Harrison) to his small parts in Dawn of the Dead and Knightriders and, of course, his work as Captain Rhodes in Day of the Dead. In addition, Pilato addresses the remake, where his career went following Day of the Dead's disastrous box office upon its initial release and his thoughts on the movie being rediscovered and hailed as a classic.

In Travelogue of the Dead (directed by Naomi Holwill) join Pilato as he travels across Dublin, Edinburgh and Glasgow in October 2009, celebrating the 25th anniversary of DAY OF THE DEAD. Witness him meeting the fans, reciting his most famous lines from the movie - live and on stage - and drinking with the best of them!

Calum Waddell also penned the For Every Dawn There Is A Day collector’s booklet which is an essay on the making of the movie that collects brand new interviews with Romero, Savini, editor Pasquale Buba, asst director/ composer John Harrison and actors Joe Pilato, Lori Cardille and Gary Steele

The two-disc 25th Anniversary Edition Day Of The Dead (cert. 18) will be released on Bly-ray by Arrow View on 29th March 2010.

Special Features: Four sleeve art options; double-sided fold-out poster; ‘For Every Dawn There Is A Day’ collector’s booklet; ‘Day Of The Dead: Desertion’ – an all new exclusive 24-page collector’s comic featuring new Bub storyline; 5.1 DTS HD Master Audio and 1.0 Mono audio options.

Disc One (Blu-ray): Theatrical feature; audio commentary with special effects team of Greg Nicotero, Howard Berger, Everett Burrell and Mike Deak; Joe Of The Dead – Acting In A Romero Classic; Travelogue Of The Dead.

Disc Two (DVD): The Many Days Of The Dead; Behind the Zombies footage; Romero Zombography; Photo Album of the Dead; Souvenirs of the Dead; Night Of The Living Dead trailer; Dawn Of The Dead trailer; TV Ads of the Dead; The Audio Recollections of Richard Liberty; Wampum Mine promo.

George A Romero's
Survival of the Dead

Picture
George A Romero's Survival of the Dead premieres on VOD, Amazon and Xbox Live April 30th and In Theatres May 28th!
The Wagner/Cuban Companies' Magnet Releasing, genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, announced that it has acquired US rights to GEORGE A. ROMERO’S SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD, the latest in the legendary and beloved series of zombie films which bowed at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals earlier this year.

Romero, one of the most influential and respected horror authors of all time, has created a new, terrifying vision that combines viscerally gory undead action with biting social commentary and a return to the black humor and playfulness of his seminal film, DAWN OF THE DEAD. Magnet will release the film as part of its Ultra VOD program this spring, debuting it on VOD platforms nationwide a month before its theatrical release.

Like its predecessors, GEORGE A. ROMERO’S SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD takes place in a desperate, nightmarish world where the dead walk the earth, relentlessly attacking the living. It is the story of Plum Island – a beautiful refuge whose isolation allows two powerful families to maintain a semblance of order in the wake of the zombie holocaust. But as the inhabitants slowly die off, the two clans become sharply divided: the O’Flynns believe that the undead must be destroyed without exception, while the Muldoons insist that afflicted loved ones be kept “alive” until a cure is found. The result is an escalating showdown with echoes of a classic Western stand-off that erupts in brutality and violence.

“George A. Romero is an undisputed cinematic legend, and we’re honored to be bringing another installment of this incredible series of films to horror fans,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. “SURVIVAL is smart, extremely fun and a worthy addition to the ‘Of the Dead’ franchise.”

Says Romero, “I’m a big admirer of the team at Magnolia. They’re creative and passionate, and I’m excited to put “Survival” in their hands.”

Lets hope this one turns out to be a winner!

Nut Up Or Shut Up
ZOMBIELAND Hits DvD Feb. 2nd

Picture
Zombieland is a 2009 American Zombie Comedy directed by Ruben Fleischer from a screenplay written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

The film stars Woody Harrelson (Tallahassee), Jesse Eisenberg (Columbus), Emma Stone (Wichita), and Abigail Breslin (Little Rock) as survivors of a Zombie Apocolypse. Together they take an extended road trip in an attempt to find a sanctuary free from zombies, following a set of "rules" designed to keep them alive where others have failed, all the while trying to "enjoy the little things" and killing zombies in a variety of creative ways.

The Plot

The film takes place within a post-apocalyptic America, where a zombie Apocalypse has been triggered when mad cow disease, became mad human disease and then worse.

College student Columbus  is on his way to Columbus, Ohio to see if his parents are still alive. He loses his car in an accident and encounters Tallahassee who is on a quest to find Twinkies! They travel together and when they stop at a grocery store, they meet two sisters, Wichita and Little Rock. The sisters con them into handing over their weapons and steal their vehicle. The two men walk and soon find a Hummer H2 truck loaded with weapons. They then meet the girls again, who attempt to take the truck, their vehicle having broken down. Columbus proposes a truce and suggests they travel together.

Columbus tells Wichita he is heading home to Columbus, Ohio but she blurts out that it has been burned to the ground and is overrun by zombies. He decides instead to stay with the group. Wichita tells Columbus that she is taking Little Rock to "Pacific Playland" in Los Angeles, an amusement park rumored to be zombie-free.

On the way to the park, they pass through Hollywood and Tallahassee decides to take them to Bill Murrays mansion. Tallahassee and Wichita meet Murray himself, uninfected but disguised as a zombie with make-up so that he can walk safely among the infected and play golf without being bothered. Little Rock is unfamiliar with Bill Murray so Columbus shows her the film Ghostbusters. Murray later enters in order to scare Columbus and Little Rock as a practical joke, but thinking he is a real zombie Columbus shoots and kills him.

After a makeshift funeral, Tallahassee reveals he lost his son to the zombies, rather than his pet dog as he had earlier led Columbus to believe. Wichita begins developing feelings for Columbus and fearing attachment, she leaves with Little Rock for Pacific Playland. Columbus decides to go after Wichita, and he and Tallahassee pursue the sisters in one of Murray's vehicles.

Wichita and Little Rock arrive at Pacific Playland and turn on all the rides and lights, attracting nearby zombies. A battle ensues, leaving the sisters trapped on a drop tower ride and running low on ammo. Tallahassee and Columbus arrive just as the sisters' ammunition is depleted. Tallahassee manages to lure the majority away, then intentionally locks himself in a game booth while Columbus goes after the sisters. Columbus saves the girls and in thanks, Wichita reveals her real name to him. The two share their first kiss. Tallahassee eliminates the remaining zombies single-handedly. Columbus comes to the realization that this is the only family he needs, and the four leave Pacific Playland together.

Resident Evil: Afterlife
Coming September 10th 2010

Picture
Resident Evil: Afterlife is an upcoming 2010 science fiction horror film and is the fourth installment in the film adaptations based on the Capcom survival horror video game series Resident Evil. The film was written and will be directed by Paul W.S. Anderson.  It will be the first film in the series to be released in 3-D.
After many delays, it is scheduled to be released on September 10, 2010.

Resident Evil: Afterlife picks up where the third film left off. Since the events of Resident Evil: Extinction, Alice has been roaming the world searching for any remaining survivors. As she enters the ruined Los Angeles, she stumbles onto a prison surrounded by Zombies. She then teams up with a group of survivors who had been hiding in Los Angeles since the T-Virus outbreak and helps them break out other survivors held within the jail which include Claire's brother Chris Redfield.

At the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con, Jovovich confirmed that she would return in the lead role, and noted that the clones from Extinction would also be returning.  On September 22, 2009 it was announced that Ali Larter would indeed reprise her role as Claire Redfield, and on September 30, 2009, it was announced that Shawn Roberts would join the cast as Albert Wesker, with Wentworth Miller joining as Chris Redfield, and Spencer Locke returning as K-Mart.  Kim Coates and Boris Kodjoe have also been cast.

Sounds like this one might be worth checking out with Anderson back at the helm, not too crazy about the 3-D aspect of things, but I'm willing to give it a shot!

Left 4 Dead 2
XBox 360

Picture
Left 4 Dead 2 is a cooperative first-person shooter game. It is the sequel to Valve Corporation's award-winning Left 4 Dead. The game launched on November 17, 2009, for Microsoft Windows ans XBox 360 in the United States and November 20 in Europe.  It builds upon the cooperatively focused gameplay of the original and uses Valve's proprietary Source engine, the same game engine used in Left 4 Dead. The game made its world premiere at E3 2009 with a trailer during the Microsoft press event.

PLOT

Like Left 4 Dead, the sequel involves the aftermath of an apocalyptic pandemic.  There has been an outbreak of a rabies-like pathogen that causes infected humans to behave like Zombies.  The four survivors have to fight their way through the hordes of infected, using safehouses along the way to rest and recover, in order to reach extraction points. Left 4 Dead 2 is set in the Southern United States, starting in Savannah, Georgia and ending in New Orleans, Louisiana. Left 4 Dead 2 introduces four new survivors, whose backstory is again provided through dialogue. Unlike the first game, where there was no significant story development, Left 4 Dead 2 features a story arc.

After climbing a hotel in Savannah to achieve rescue, the survivors find themselves abandoned by helicopters, and make their way to the local mall after hearing word of a second evacuation point there ("Dead Center"). Following a brief encounter with a gun store owner, Whitaker (voiced by Dayton Callie), the mall is found to be overrun, and the four use a stock car to bust out of the mall and travel towards New Orleans. Following an encounter with the survivors featured in Left 4 Dead ("The Passing", a downloadable mission set to be released in Spring 2010), the group finds the highway completely blocked by wrecked vehicles, and the four are forced to travel through a still-operating (but abandoned) amusement park, and start a huge fireworks-and-lights show used by the fictional band, The Midnight Riders, in order to attract the attention of a helicopter pilot ("Dark Carnival"). Though rescued, they find that their pilot has been infected, and Nick is forced to kill him. This causes the helicopter to crash into a bayou ("Swamp Fever"). Finding brief shelter in a plantation mansion, they make radio contact with a boat captain named Virgil who rescues them, but informs them that he needs additional diesel fuel to make it to New Orleans. Amid a torrential downpour, the survivors go ashore, making their way through an abandoned sugar mill to a gas station to get fuel supplies, and return to the boat ("Hard Rain"). Virgil takes them to New Orleans, where the military appears to still be evacuating civilians, before travelling upriver to find more survivors. But as the group make their way to the extraction point, they find that the military is actually bombing bridges to cover their retreat ("The Parish"). The survivors then make their way across a lift bridge amid a mass of infected and board the last military helicopter leaving the city before the bridge is destroyed.

Although the survivors' fate after evacuation is left unexplained, Chet Faliszek, the game's writer has said that the military is taking survivors to cruise ships in an attempt to escape the infection.

Image Comics
The Walking Dead

Picture
The Walking Dead is an American monthly black and white comic published by Image Comics beginning in 2003. The comic was created by writer Robert Kirkman and artist Tony Moore (replaced by Charlie Adlard from issue #7 onward, Moore continued to do the covers until issue #24) and chronicles the travels of a group of people trying to survive in a world stricken by a Zombie Apocalypse. The comic is still up and running with issue # 70 being released February 10th and Volume 11 of the Trade being release January 6th!

The origins of the outbreak are unknown to the characters and the readers. Since the storyline mostly follows Rick Grimes, who was comatose at the time the outbreak started, no information of how the outbreak began has been shown. There have been instances with the various introductions of new characters over the course of the series where their own perspectives and knowledge of the beginning of the crisis was revealed.

In the first 12 issues of the series it was believed that zombies were only created from zombies biting a human. However, it has now been revealed and established that any human who dies with a brain intact will reanimate as a zombie, making all of the survivors already infected, and that zombie bites just kill the victim unless the area is cut off and infection prevented/treated. Zombie body fluids getting on a human will not zombify them either, as Tyreese's (one of the main characters early on) zombie daughter's blood did not convert him, and the Governor kissing his zombie daughter didn't change him either.

The zombies of Walking Dead resemble traditional horror film zombies in that they walk and crave flesh. The zombies are slow moving but tireless, requiring no source to function. Their most dangerous weapon is their bite, which will result in a slow death, but if the location of the bite is quickly cut away, death can be prevented if wounds are treated, preventing secondary infection.

In the first issue, Rick discovered an emaciated zombie lying nearly immobile on the side of the road, so it seems that the zombies can starve (or decay) into immobility. The only way to "kill" a zombie is to destroy the brain, the most common methods being decapitation and gunshots. The further you get into The Walking Dead the more you feel like part of the group, the characters develop well and the book is not beyond killing off main characters.

This is by far the best Zombie comic I have read and would highly recommend it to both the Zombie addict and the casual reader, to fully appreciate the story start out from the beginning, the first issue is a bit pricey, but if your like myself the Trades will suite you just fine, you can pick them up for around $15 each!

Blast From The Past
1968's Night of the Living Dead

Picture
Night of the Living Dead is a 1968 independent black and white Zombie film directed by George A. Romero. Ben (Duane Jones) and Barbra (Judith O'Dea) are the protagonists of a story about the mysterious reanimation of the recently dead, and their efforts, along with five other people, to survive the night while trapped in a rural Pennsylvania farmhouse.

George Romero completed the film on a $114,000 budget, and after a decade of cinematic re-releases, it grossed some $12 million domestically and $30 million internationally.  On its release in 1968, Night of the Living Dead was strongly criticized for its explicit content, but in 1999, the Library Of Congress placed it on the National Film Registry as a film deemed "historically, culturally or aesthetically important".

The Plot

Siblings Barbra and Johnny drive to a rural Pennsylvania cemetery to place a cross with flowers on their father's grave. Johnny teases his sister, who is afraid of cemeteries, taunting, "They're coming to get you, Barbra!" A hideous looking zombie suddenly grabs Barbra and Johnny rushes to save her. A gruesome fight is the result, but Johnny is killed when he falls and smashes his head into a tombstone. Barbra flees into the car, but the zombie chases her. Barbra attempts to flee in the car as the zombie attempts to break in, but she doesn't have the key. She releases the emergency brake, and the car rolls away from the zombie. Barbra soon crashes into a tree, still chased by the zombie. She abandons the car and escapes into a nearby farmhouse to hide, still chased by the zombie. She soon finds, however, that others like the man are outside. While exploring the empty house, Barbra discovers a hideously mutilated corpse at the top of the stairs.

While attempting to flee the house, she encounters Ben (Duane Jones), who arrives in a pickup truck and defends the house against another pack of zombies, After subduing the pack, Ben sets the bodies on fire, scaring off the remaining zombies. Inside the house, another zombie emerges from a side room and Ben fights off the zombie. This is followed by an intense argument about Barbra's desire to search for Johnny. After a brief struggle, Barbra collapses in shock, and Ben carries her to a couch. Ben boards up the doors and windows from the inside, and takes a chair outside and scares off the attackers by setting it afire. Ben finds a rifle and a radio as Barbra lies catatonic. The two are unaware that Harry and Helen Cooper (Karl Hardman and Marilyn Eastman), their daughter Karen (Kyra Schon), and young couple Tom (Keith Wayne) and Judy (Judith Ridley) have been hiding in the cellar until later. One of the attackers bit Karen earlier and she has fallen ill. Harry wants the group to barricade themselves in the cellar, but Ben argues that they would, effectively, be trapping themselves. Ben carries the argument, and the group cooperates to reinforce the main part of the house.  Radio reports explain that an epidemic of mass murder is sweeping across the Eastern Seaboard. Later, Ben discovers a television upstairs and the emergency broadcast reveals that the creatures are consuming the flesh of their victims. A subsequent broadcast reports that the murders are being perpetrated by the recently deceased who have returned to life, dubbed 'ghouls'. Experts, scientists and military are not sure of the cause of the reanimation, but one scientist is certain that it is the result of radiation emanating from a space probe that exploded in the Earth's atmosphere.  A final report instructs that a gunshot or heavy blow to the head will stop the ghouls and that posses of armed men are patrolling the countryside to restore order.

Ben devises a plan to escape using his truck involving all of the men in the house. The truck is in need of fuel, so Ben and Tom go to an outside gas pump, while Harry hurls Molotov cocktails from an upper window. On the way out the door, Judy fears for Tom's safety and chases after him. Upon arriving at the pump, Ben places a torch on the ground next to the truck, and Tom carelessly splashes gasoline onto the torch, starting a fire that quickly engulfs the truck. Tom tries to drive the truck away from the gas pumps to avoid further damage, but when he goes to exit the truck, Judy gets stuck. Tom goes back into the truck to help her, but the truck explodes, killing them both. Ben runs back to the house to find that Harry has locked him out. He kicks the door open and, in a fury, gives Harry a fierce beating.  Some of the undead horde converges upon the truck and begin eating Tom and Judy's charred remains. Meanwhile, others try to break through the doors and windows of the house. Ben manages to hold them back, but drops his rifle. Harry seizes the fallen rifle and turns it on Ben, who wrestles it away from Harry and shoots him. Harry stumbles into the cellar and dies.

Shortly after, Helen discovers that her daughter, Karen, has been transformed into one of the ghouls and is consuming her father's corpse. Karen repeatedly stabs her mother with a cement trowel, killing her, before going upstairs. Meanwhile, the undead finally break into the house and Barbra sees her brother Johnny among them. The undead take Barbra away. Ben retreats into the cellar, locking the door behind him, ironically taking the course of action that Harry had recommended in the first place. He shoots the reanimated Harry and Helen Cooper, and waits out until morning, hoping for any chance of escaping the zombies.

In the morning, a posse approaches the house, hunting the remaining ghouls. Hearing the commotion, Ben ambles up the cellar stairs into the living room. Sheriff McClelland spots him through a window, and, mistaking him for a zombie, orders one of the posse members to shoot him. Still shots are shown of the vigilantes dragging Ben's body from the house and placing it on a pyre, next to the zombie that had attacked Barbra at the start of the film, as the closing credits roll. The film ends with a brief clip of the pyre burning.

This movie is a must own for any true Zombie fan, it essentially ushered in the Zombie scene in the US, some of Romero's first work, and some of his best to date!

Dawn of the Dead Hare Krishna Zombie

Picture
Wanted: Dead or Dead.

This blue-skinned ghoul wanders the halls of the local mall, stalking and terrorizing the protagonists of the hit film Dawn of the Dead.

Now he gets the Cult Classics treatment!
This disturbingly realistic Hare Krishna Zombie has multiple points of articulation and includes storage boxes, a tambourine, removable glasses, and a storage-room base. He stands about 7-inches tall and comes in clamshell packaging. In scale with past Cult Classics releases, this is one menacing creature you know you want... or do you?  Yea, you do!

This guy does not have a lot of articulation, not that he needs it, Hare Krishna's are kinda creepy to start of with, but turn him into a Zombie and you have yourself a winner!

Look for him to run you around $15 at retail!

Resident Evil 5
PS3  & XBOX 360 Release

Picture
Resident Evil 5 is a third-person Shooter video game developed and published by Capcom. The game is the seventh installment in the Resident Evil survival horror series, and was released on March 5, 2009 in Japan and on March 13, 2009 in North America and Europe for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

The game begins as Chris Redfield is deployed to Kijuju, Africa, to join Sheva Alomar in the apprehension of Ricardo Irving, who is attempting to sell a bio-organic weapon on the black market. Along the way, they witness a local being fed a parasite, which quickly takes control of his body, turning him into a Majini. As they progress, almost all Kijuju locals seen by Chris and Sheva have been turned into Majini. While moving to the location of Irving's deal, Chris and Sheva find Alpha team dead, except Captain DeChant, who gives them a hard drive containing data about Irving before he dies. Shortly after, a friendly helicopter is downed, and all nearby BSAA units are ordered to go to the crash site. At the crash site, Chris and Sheva are ambushed by Majini on motorcycles, but are then saved by Delta team. Among Delta team is Josh Stone, Sheva's mentor who gives Chris data from a hard drive that contains a picture of Jill Valentine, his old partner, who was presumed dead after a confrontation with Albert Wesker. Chris does not tell Sheva about the image and they continue. They eventually confront Irving and during this confrontation, a hooded figure arrives to aid Irving's escape. Irving leaves behind files which indicate that an oil field in the Marshlands, which was used to test out bio-organic weapons, is the deal location. The previously suspected location is discovered to be a hoax to slow the BSAA while the actual deal was taking place. Chris and Sheva report this to headquarters and then attempt to regroup with Delta team. Upon arriving at the rendezvous point, they find that Delta team has also been killed by a bio-organic weapon, but Sheva cannot find Josh among them. After defeating the bio-weapon, Sheva suggests reporting back to HQ, being that they are the two sole survivors. Chris refuses, admitting to Sheva his true reason for participating in the mission, and expresses his determination in finding out if Jill is still alive. After a brief argument, Sheva concludes that they are partners, and she will help him all the way. They continue on to the Marshlands, eventually finding Josh alive. They pursue Irving on a boat, but he escapes again and the oil field is blown up while the two escape on a speedboat with Josh. The trio locate and catch up to Irving's boat, and Chris and Sheva board it. Irving confronts the duo, and then injects himself with a virus, which causes him to mutate into a gigantic beast. Chris and Sheva defeat the mutated Irving, who is detached from the gigantic beast body, and upon death, he tells Chris that he will find answers to his questions in a nearby cave.

Upon arriving in the cave, Josh leaves the pair in order to report to HQ. The cavern leads Chris and Sheva to the underground kingdom of the Ndipaya tribe. As they explore, they find an underground base, one of the first to be set up by Umbrella, but currently operated by Tricell. Chris and Sheva find evidence and documentation that the Progenitor virus, which is the component in both the T and G-virus that controls a subject's body, was found and manufactured here. The Progenitor virus was manufactured from a plant residing in the Ndipaya kingdom, called the Stairway to the Sun. The plant was used in Ndipayan ceremonies, but Ozwell Spencer took interest in it, and drove the Ndipaya out to build a base and study the plant, which eventually yielded the Progenitor virus. Chris and Sheva progress through the underground laboratory, and find a massive chamber with thousands of capsules containing human test subjects. The facility is documented in one of the hard drives, so Chris searches the computer database for an entry about Jill. The elevator takes them to the capsule in which Jill was being held. The bio-organic weapon, U-8, attempts to stop them from going up, but Chris and Sheva defeat the weapon and continue. They reach the capsule and open it to find it empty. Excella Gionne then appears on a computer screen and warns them to leave. Chris and Sheva later intercept a radio transmission of Excella talking to Wesker, indicating Wesker's survival. They confront Excella, but she infects a test subject with the Uroboros virus, which turns him into a bio-weapon. After killing the weapon, the two pursue Excella, eventually catching up to her. When interrogating Excella, Chris and Sheva are attacked by the hooded figure who aided Irving's escape. Wesker then reveals himself and unmasks the hooded figure, Jill, who is hostile and fights alongside Wesker. After a short fight, Wesker escapes leaving Chris and Sheva to battle Jill. They spot a device on Jill's chest, which they remove, and she regains control of her body. She apologizes for her actions and urges Chris and Sheva to pursue Wesker. Chris, who is reluctant to leave Jill, grudgingly agrees.

Chris and Sheva emerge on the surface and spot Wesker and Excella boarding a cargo ship. They pursue them and board the ship. They find Excella but she escapes, dropping a case of full syringes, which Sheva collects. Meanwhile, Wesker reminisces about a confrontation with Spencer, who tells Wesker that he is the only surviving subject from the "Wesker Plan," which was an attempt to create the ideal human being for Spencer's envisioned utopia. Spencer fantasizes about being the god of this utopia and Wesker impales him, declaring, "The right to be a god? That right is now mine."

Meanwhile, Chris and Sheva find a pile of corpses with Excella among them, alive but in pain. Wesker, over the ship's intercom system, implies that Excella has been infected with Uroboros. Suddenly, Uroboros erupts from Excella's mouth, consuming her body and absorbing the corpses. Chris and Sheva escape, regroup, and use a satellite laser on the cargo ship to defeat the giant Uroboros monster. They continue to pursue Wesker, whom they spot over a surveillance monitor about to board a bomber that, if shot down, would infect the entire world with the Uroboros virus. Jill then calls Chris and tells him that Wesker's strength is the result of a potentially unstable virus and that he must regularly inject a serum in precise amounts to maintain his power. Before losing connection, Jill suggests that an overdose of this drug, which Excella always carried in a suitcase by her, would likely act as a poison. Sheva then discovers that the serum is in one of the syringes she collected from Excella. The two find Wesker, restrain him, and inject him with the serum. He escapes onto the bomber, and they pursue him. After a short confrontation with Wesker, Chris deactivates the bomber, which plummets into a volcano. Before they crash, Sheva shoots Wesker off the bomber into the volcano below. Chris and Sheva, now in the volcano, discover that Wesker survived and he infects himself with Uroboros. They defeat the infected Wesker, who falls into the lava. A helicopter appears over the horizon, manned by Josh and Jill, and Chris and Sheva board it. As it attempts to fly away, Wesker tries to pull it down into the lava with him. Chris and Sheva kill Wesker with two rocket propelled granades, and the helicopter is freed. In the helicopter, Chris ponders whether it is worth fighting to preserve humanity. He looks at Sheva and Jill and then decides to continue.  So why are you still readin this?  Get the game and start killin some Zombies!

World War Z:
An Oral History of the Zombie War

Picture
WWZ is a 2006 post-apocalyptic Zombie novel by Max Brooks. It is a follow-up to his 2003 book The Zombie Survival Guide. Rather than a grand overview or single narrative, World War Z is a collection of individual accounts in the form of interviews with characters conducted by the author. Brooks plays the role of an agent of the United Nations Postwar Commission who published the novel a decade after the Zombie War. The United Nations left out much of his work from the official report, choosing to focus on facts and figures from the war rather than individual stories; these form the bulk of the novel. The interviews chart a decade-long war against zombies from the view point of many different people of various nationalities. The personal accounts also describe the changing religious, geo-political, and environmental aftermath of the Zombie War.

Through a series of oral interviews, Brooks as an agent of the United Nations Postwar Commission describes the history of World War Z. Although the true origin of the zombie pandemic is unknown, the story begins in China after a zombie from a previous outbreak bites a young boy. The Chinese government attempts to contain the infection and concocts a crisis involving Taiwan to mask the true purpose of increased military activity. Infected refugees seeking a cure and the black market organ trade spread the infection to other countries; an outbreak in Cape Town, South Africa finally brings the plague, then known as "African rabies", to global attention.

As the infection spreads, only Israel and a few other countries initiate nationwide quarantine programs. The United States does little to prepare for the pandemic, since it is sapped of political will by several "brushfire wars" and lulled into a false sense of security by an ineffective and fraudulently marketed vaccine called "Phalanx". When the world recognizes the true scope of the problem, a period begins known as the "Great Panic". The US Army sends a task force to Yonkers, New York in a high-profile military campaign intended to restore American morale. Due to reliance on ineffective Cold War-era tactics, and technology that is ineffective against zombies, however, the force is routed. Other countries suffer similarly disastrous defeats against their own infections.

More countries succumb to the zombie plague and human civilization teeters on the brink of collapse. All of the United States east of the Rocky Mountains falls to the zombies. In an attempt to halt the flow of infected refugees from India, Iran destroys several key bridges within Pakistan, leading to a nuclear war between the two countries. Japan is forced to evacuate its non-infected population to South Korea, Kamchatka, and other areas. Meanwhile, millions of refugees attempt to live on the oceans in massive armadas of ships, a "solution" that proves disastrous for many as infections break out among the refugees. Many people in North America flee to the wilds of northern Canada, but millions die after realizing they are unprepared for the harsh climate.

The turning point of the war comes in South Africa, where the government adopts a plan drafted by an ex-apartheid government official named Paul Redeker. The plan calls for the establishment of small "safe zones", ideally protected by natural barriers, within which the infection can be eradicated. Large groups of refugees are to be kept alive outside the safe zones for the purpose of distracting the hordes of undead and allowing those within the safe zones time to regroup. Although Redeker and his plan are criticized as heartless, various governments worldwide quickly adopt their own versions of the "Redeker Plan".

The United States, after relocating the capital to Hawaii and establishing the area west of the Rocky Mountains as its safe zone, restructures its economy for wartime production. The United States elects a coalition government, with a President and Vice President from opposing political parties. In the eastern United States, several quarantine zones attempt to maintain their barricades with minimal resupply drops and limited help. Several nations adopt military tactics and technologies from previous wars that prove more effective against the zombies than modern weapons. Eventually, after a conference in Honolulu, the remaining nations of the world agree to begin a military offensive to reclaim their territories.

Ten years after the "official" end of the worldwide zombie war, millions of undead are still active and the geopolitical landscape of the Earth has been transformed. A democratic Cuba has become the world's most thriving economy and international banking capital, and Tibet, freed from Chinese rule, is now the world's most populated country. Following a religious revolution, Russia is now an expansionist theocracy. After its civil war, China has become a democracy but has been vastly depopulated. North Korea is completely empty, the entire population thought to have relocated underground though no one is certain whether the tunnels may by this point be home to 23 million zombies. The United Nations fields a large allied military force, engaged in eliminating the remaining undead.

In colder areas of the globe, outbreaks occur every spring, when frozen zombies thaw and find their way to human populations. Large swarms still roam the ocean floor and occasionally emerge onto dry land. Several regions, most notably Iceland, are completely overrun. Major effects of the war are a drastic reduction in the human population and the devastation of many environments and species, as much by desperate humans as by marauding zombies.

But enough with the previews, go out and get this book, great read, and lots of good tips, you know, just in case!

Blast From The Past
2007's 28 Weeks Later

Picture
28 Weeks Later is a 2007 British Post-Apocalyptic Zombie Film, and sequel to the 2002 film 28 Days Later (Also a must see). The film was directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, and was released in the United Kingdom and in the United States on May 11th 2007. It was mostly filmed in London, England with some scenes also being filmed in the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.

The Plot

Don (Robert Carlyle) and his wife Alice (Catherine McCormack) live in a barricaded cottage they share with four others, somewhere in rural Great Britain. They let a terrified boy inside, and moments later, a pack of the infected Zombies attack and enter the house. Alice refuses to leave without the boy; Don abandons Alice and escapes as the sole survivor.

Over the course of 28 weeks following the original outbreak, the infected have all starved to death and Britain has been declared relatively safe. An American-led NATO force, under the command of US Army Brigadier General Stone (Idris Elba), begins repopulating the country. Amongst the new population are Tammy (Imogen Poots) and Andy (Mackintosh Muggleton), Don and Alice's children, who were in Spain during the initial outbreak. During their subsequent medical inspection, Major Scarlet Ross (Rose Byrne), chief medical officer of District 1, notes Andy's differently colored eyes, a trait inherited from his mother. They are subsequently admitted to District 1, a heavily guarded zone of London on the Isle Of Dogs guarded by the US Army. Sergeant Doyle (Jeremy Renner), and his friend, Flynn (Harold Perrineau), a helicopter pilot, are amongst the military presence charged with guarding District 1. The children are reunited with their father who is now head caretaker of the district.

The next day the two children slip out of the safe zone to return to their old home, where Andy discovers Alice, disheveled but alive. Andy and Tammy are recaptured by the US Army while Alice is decontaminated. A blood test reveals that she is infected with the Rage virus but displaying few symptoms, labeling her an asymptomatic carrier. Using his caretaker passcard to bypass security, Don makes an unauthorized visit to Alice in her isolation cell. When they kiss, the Rage virus in her saliva immediately infects Don, who kills her and goes on to attack and infect soldiers in District 1.

District 1 is put into Code Red Lockdown, and civilians are herded into safe rooms. Don breaks into one of the rooms and begins spreading a wave of infection. Scarlet manages to rescue Tammy from containment but Andy gets separated from the group. Soldiers are ordered to shoot only the infected, but as control slips away, they are ordered to shoot all non-military personnel. Doyle, unable to bring himself to comply with the order, abandons his post and escapes with Scarlet, the children, and others through an underground tunnel. Stone then orders that District 1 be firebombed. District 1 is decimated, but large numbers of the infected, including Don, escape the bombardment. Scarlet informs Doyle that the children may hold the key to a cure, and must be protected at all costs. Flynn arrives by helicopter to pick up Doyle, but refuses to take anyone else as they would be shot down if carrying possible infected.

Flynn contacts Doyle by radio and tells him to head to Wembley Stadium, but to leave the civilians. Doyle ignores his instructions and begins escorting the civilians to Wembley, breaking into an abandoned car to escape nerve gas released to kill the infected. In the process of push starting the car, Doyle is killed by fellow soldiers. Now pursued by helicopter, Scarlet drives into the London Underground where she and the children continue on foot. In the darkness, Scarlet is ambushed and killed by Don. Don then attacks and bites Andy, but Tammy shoots Don before he can kill Andy. Andy remains symptom-free like his mother. The children continue to Wembley Stadium and are picked up by a reluctant Flynn, who flies them across the English Channel to France, as previously instructed by Doyle.

28 days pass. Calls for help and screams can be heard over the radio of Flynn's now abandoned helicopter. A swarm of infected are shown sprinting through a subway exit. As they run into the open, the Eiffel Tower comes into view, revealing that the Rage virus has spread to France.

An overall great Zombie flick, a must own in my book!

Rumors have been heard about a possible 28 Months Later movie, slated for a 2011 release!

Pride and Prejudice
and Zombies!

Picture
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2009) is a novel by Seth Grahame-Smith. It is a mashup combining Jane Austen's classic 1813 novel Pride and Prejudice with elements of modern Zombie fiction. Austen is credited as co-author of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. It was first published in April 2009 by Quirk Books and in October 2009 a Deluxe Edition was released.  Recently, it was also announced that Steve Hockensmith is to author a prequel, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls, to be published on March 30, 2010.

THE PLOT

The story follows the plot of Pride and Prejudice, but places the novel in an alternative universe version of Regency-era England where zombies roam the English countryside. Described as the "stricken", "sorry stricken", "undead", "unmentionables", or just "zombies", the deceased ancestors of England are generally viewed by the characters as a troublesome, albeit deadly, nuisance. Their presence alters the original plot of the story in both subtle and significant ways: Messages between houses are sometimes lost when the couriers are captured and eaten; characters openly discuss and judge the zombie-fighting abilities of others; women weigh the pros and cons of carrying a musket (it provides safety, but is considered "unladylike").

Elizabeth Bennet and her four sisters live on a countryside estate with their parents. Mr. Bennet guides his daughters in martial arts and weapons training, molding them into a fearsome zombie-fighting army; meanwhile, Mrs. Bennet endeavours to marry the girls off to wealthy suitors. When the wealthy and single Mr. Bingley purchases a nearby house, Mrs. Bennet spies an opportunity and sends the girls to the first ball where Bingley is expected to appear. The girls defend the party from a zombie attack, and attraction sparks between Mr. Bingley and the eldest daughter Jane Bennet. Elizabeth, however, clashes with Bingley's friend, the haughty monster-hunter Fitzwilliam Darcy.

The Bennets are shaken when Bingley and his companions suddenly abandon his country home and return to the walled fortress city of London with little explanation. When the local militia arrives in town to exhume and destroy dead bodies, Elizabeth becomes friendly with one of the soldiers, George Wickham, who tells Elizabeth that Darcy cheated Wickham out of an inheritance.

Elizabeth's dislike of Darcy turns into full-blown hatred when she learns that Darcy plotted to separate Bingley from her sister Jane. As demanded by her warrior's code of honor, she vows to avenge the slight to her family by killing Darcy. Later that evening, she is afforded that opportunity when he appears unannounced at the cottage where she is visiting her newlywed friend Charlotte (who has been secretly bitten by a zombie and is slowly turning into one herself). Before Elizabeth can fetch her katana and behead him, Darcy surprises her again by proposing marriage. The scene culminates in a vicious verbal and physical fight, in which Darcy is wounded. He eventually escapes with his life and writes a long letter to Elizabeth in which he explains his actions. He broke up Jane and Bingley out of fear that Jane had contracted the "mysterious plague" and was about to turn into a zombie. With regards to the allegedly wronged soldier Wickham, Darcy explains that Wickham had attempted to elope with Darcy's younger sister in an attempt to get his hands on her considerable fortune — this was the "inheritance" that Darcy had cheated the man out of. Elizabeth realizes that she has judged Darcy too harshly, and is humbled. Darcy, meanwhile, realizes that his arrogant nature encourages people to believe the rumors about him, and resolves to act more appropriately.

Elizabeth embarks on a trip around the country with her aunt and uncle, fighting zombies along the way. At Pemberley she runs into Darcy, who helps her to defeat a rampaging horde of zombies. Darcy's new attitude and mannerisms impress Elizabeth and lead her to consider reconciling their relationship; unfortunately, all hopes are dashed when it is discovered that her younger sister Lydia has eloped to London with Wickham. The Bennet family fears the worst, but eventually receive word that Wickham and Lydia have married, following an "accident" that has rendered Wickham an incontinent quadriplegic. After visiting the Bennets, the couple adjourns to Ireland. Elizabeth discovers that it was Darcy who engineered the union, thus saving the Bennet family from ruin.

Darcy and Bingley return to the countryside, and Bingley resumes courting Jane. Elizabeth hopes to renew her relationship with Darcy, but his aunt, the Lady Catherine, interferes, insisting that her daughter Anne is a better match for her nephew. Lady Catherine challenges Elizabeth to a fight to the death, intent on eliminating the competition, but Elizabeth defeats Catherine and her cadre of ninjas!  She spares Catherine's life. Darcy is touched by this gesture, and he returns to Elizabeth. George A. Romero's
Diary of the Dead

Picture
Diary of the Dead is an American horror film by George A. Romero. Although independently produced, it was distributed theatrically by Dimension Films and was released in theaters on February 15, 2008 and on DvD by The Weinstein Company and Genius Entertainment on May 20, 2008. Diary of the Dead is the fifth film in Romero's highly acclaimed Dead series of zombie films. It is not a direct sequel to previous films in the series, and "a rejigging of the myth" according to Romero.

The Plot

The movie begins with an introduction to a documentary called The Death of Death. The movie then shows a view from a cameraman and a news reporter, reporting on a murder of a local family. The reporter and newswoman chat while the ambulance crew load the deceased bodies. Suddenly, one of the bodies moves and an ambulance worker attempts to resuscitate the person when they are bitten. Another zombie approaches the news crew and police open fire on them but are ineffective at killing the zombies. The news lady is bitten on the neck while the cameraman films. The scene cuts to a group of young film studies students from the University Of Pittsburgh - Jason, Ridley, Francine, Mary, Debra, Tony, Gordo and Eliot, who are in the woods making their own horror film about a Mummy along with their faculty advisor, Andrew Maxwell, when they hear on the radio the news of apparent mass-rioting and mass murder. Soon, these reports include cannibalism and the fact that the recently deceased are inexplicably waking and walking.

Ridley and Francine decide to leave the group, while Jason, who wants to film the events documentary-style, heads to the dormitory of his girlfriend Debra Monahan. When she cannot contact her family they travel in Mary's RV to the house of Debra's parents in Scranton, PA.  While driving her RV, Mary sees a car accident and runs over a highway patrolman and three other zombies trying to escape from them. The group stops and Mary tries to commit suicide shooting herself in the head with a pistol. Her friends take her to a hospital where they realize that the dead are returning to life as zombies and they need to fight to survive while traveling to Debra's parents' house. On their way the fuel line of the RV is cut but they are assisted by a deaf Amish man named Samuel. Just before escaping Samuel is bitten and takes his own life by stabbing himself with a scythe through his head. They later pass a city and are stopped by an armed gang. They try to barter with the men, who are better armed and supplied. The men are survivors of the attack on their city; everyone else left. The leader is a member of the National Guard, and does not believe the military will help. They rest in the city for a while, and edit their videos. There is a small argument amongst Jason and Debra, who does not share his belief in the need for videos. Jason sees the recordings as a necessity to show the world what was really happening. His uploaded videos reach 72,000 hits in eight minutes. They also find out that Debra's family were camping for the extent of the crisis, and is just now on their way home. The National Guard survivors gear up after one of their members had a heart attack and dies, then goes missing. They mistakenly kill one of their own and the chase the zombie into the fuel supply area, killing it with a canister of Hydrochloric acid. The students resupply and leave for Debra's house. They get a video stream from Tokyo from a survivor until they lose signal. The radio towers have become unreliable. The only dependable source of information is from the internet, added by bloggers.

When they arrive at Debra's house they assume that her family are still missing but find the reanimated corpses of her mother and brother who they fight off. They escape the house and decide to travel back to Ridley's mansion. Members of the real National Guard stop and rob them. The leader of the unit enters the RV and forces Jason at point blank to turn off his camera while they rob the RV. They steal all but the weapons (the bow and a shotgun) and run off shooting their rifles in the air.

The group watches video feed from a zombie hunting group. The group enter a building and find an old couple, who warn them not to come in. The group enters anyway and one of their members is attacked by a zombie. They kill three of them then the three uninjured men debate over whether or not to kill the couple for not telling them about their family members. The injured member kills the old couple before taking his own life.

They arrive at Ridley's mansion to an unlocked front door and find it abandoned. A bookcase in the mansion opens to reveal a Panic Room where a delusional Ridley stumbles out. He brings the group on a grand tour and then explains that his father was the first to turn, followed by a few of the servants and his mother and that Francine was attacked by his butler. He invites Debra and Tony to follow him outside to where he buried his family and the servants. It turns out that he did not bury them, but just put them in the pool. Ridley locks the two in the pool room and runs away to the house where he transforms and begins to hunt the group. The professor hears the commotion and runs into the panic room with the shotgun. Ridley attacks Tracy and Jason at the RV, before Jason distracts Ridley long enough for Tracy to knock him out. She then runs to the RV and drives away, angry at Jason for filming rather than helping. Ridley travels back to the house and kills another member of the group, falling into a bathtub and getting electrocuted in the process. The survivors go back to the panic room for a while, but Ridley returns and infects Jason. The professor cuts through Ridley's head with a sword and then Debra shoots Jason. Debra watches the video on Jason's camera and sees his last message, about his happiness to be documenting the events, apparently filmed right before his attack. Debra decides to continue the video.

In the morning they awake to see the staff of the mansion who were in the pool have made their way out and were breaking into the mansion. The professor, Debra, and Tony lock themselves in the panic room. Inside Debra watches the last thing Jason downloaded. Two men had formed a zombie hunting group and had tied three zombies to trees as targets. The last one was a woman hanging from a tree by her hair. They shot her in the lower part of her head, allowing the rest of the body to fall without causing the brain to be destroyed; the eyes can clearly be seen to be still moving. After seeing this, Debra wonders whether people are worth saving.

Overall I enjoyed this movie, not some of Romero's best work, but definitely worth a watch!

2005's Marvel Zombies
Superheros Eat Flesh Too

Picture
Marvel Zombies is a five-issue limited series published from December 2005 to April 2006 by Marvel Comics. The series was written by Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead) with art by Sean Phillips and covers by Arthur Suydam.

It was the first series in the Marvel Zombies Series of related stories, the story starts when a virus comes to earth and turns all earth heroes and some humans into zombies, they were trapped in a dimension by Magneto, who was eaten by said zombies.

The Plot

In an alternative universe 2149, a zombified Sentry infects the Avengers. The infection spreads via contact with the blood of the victim, usually through a bite by an infected individual. The zombified superbeings largely retain their intellect and personality, although they are constantly driven by the hunger for fresh meat.

After rescuing Ultimate Reed Richards of the 1610 world, Magneto eventually learns that the Acolytes and Forge are still alive on Asteroid M. However, before he can reach them, he is killed and eaten (but not before beheading Hawkeye). The Silver Surfer then arrives on Earth and informs the zombies that his master Galactus is en route to devour the planet. The zombies attack the Surfer, who is overpowered and devoured by several of the former heroes: Colonel America (the Captain America of this universe), Iron Man, Giant-Man, Spider-man, Luke Cage, the Hulk, and Wolverine.  After acquiring a portion of the Power Cosmic, they slaughter the remaining zombified heroes.

The Acolytes return to Earth to find Magneto, but instead discover a still-living Black Panther. The Panther has escaped from the lab of the zombie Giant-Man, who has been keeping him alive as a food source. As a result of several feedings, the Panther is now missing an arm and a foot. After observing the Wasp's head begging for flesh, he reasons that the hunger is more psychological than physical.

Galactus then arrives on Earth and is attacked by the zombies, but he repels them easily. Giant-Man, Iron Man, and Bruce Banner create a device that amplifies the powers they gained from the Silver Surfer, and together they are able to injure Galactus. The cosmic-powered zombies fight off zombified versions of several supervillains and then proceed to devour Galactus. Giant-Man, the Hulk, Iron Man, Luke Cage, Spider-Man and Wolverine are then infused with Galactus's power cosmic, becoming the collective Galacti. At the same time this is occurring, the Ultimate Universe version of Reed Richards seeks a cure to the infected Fantastic Four who had earlier crossed over to the Ultimate Marvel universe from 2149. The zombies escape and are defeated by Ultimate Doctor Doom (Reed in Doom's body). After tossing the immobilized carcasses of the Ultimate Frightful Four, Doom regains his body. Ultimate Doom -one of the very few living creatures who is immune to the effects of the Zombie Virus -traps himself in the Zombie Universe and engages in confrontation with the Zombie Galacti.

Five years later, Forge, the Black Panther and the Wasp return to Earth. The Panther and the Wasp are now equipped with new cybernetic limbs and the Wasp is also lucid once more. They find nothing but plant life as the zombies have long since departed.

Confused yet?  You should be, this series is well drawn and fun to read, if your not too crazy about continuity!

This series spawned several sequels as well as crossovers, and lots of merchandise and toys!

Plants vs. Zombies
PopCap Games

Picture
Plants vs. Zombies is a tower defense video game developed and published by PopCap Games for Windows, Mac OS X, and iPhone OS. The game involves a homeowner planting defensive plants to repel an army of zombies. It was released on May 5, 2009. An Xbox 360 version is reported to be in development, and was announced at Casual Connect in July 2009.

GamePlay

Plants vs. Zombies sees players placing different types of plants, such as repeaters, potato mines, peashooters, cattails, hypno-shrooms and many others, each with their own unique offensive or defensive capabilities, across the front lawn, back lawn, and roof of a house in order to stop a horde of Zombies from devouring the brains of the residents. The playing field is divided into a number of horizontal tracks, and in general, although there are exceptions, a Zombie will only move towards the player's house along one track, and plants can only attack or defend against Zombies in the track they are planted in. In the game's initial levels, if the Zombie reaches the player's house, a one-shot tool (such as a lawn mower) can be used to completely wipe out Zombies in that track, but the tool will not be restored until the next level. Zombies, except in special cases, will start to devour any plant in their way before continuing towards the house.

The player starts with a limited number of seed packs and seed pack slots that they can use during most levels. New seed packs are gained by completing levels, while the number of slots can be increased through purchases with in-game money. At the start of a level, the player is shown the various types of Zombies to expect and given the opportunity to select which seed packs to take into the level. In order to plant a seed, the player must have collected a specific amount of sunlight. Sunlight is generated by plants which provide sunlight at regular intervals, or is automatically generated regularly for the player during daytime levels. Seed packs also have a short time delay before the same seed can be planted again. Several plants are nocturnal, having a lower sunlight cost and are ideal for nighttime levels, but will remain asleep during daytime levels unless startled by specific varieties of plants. In the "back yard" levels that includes a swimming pool, seeds must be planted atop lily pads on water spaces, while on the roof levels, all seeds must be planted in clay pots. The various plant abilities range from firing projectiles at zombies, turning zombies against each other, quickly exploding and wiping out an area of zombies, and slowing down zombies through a high defensive value. Certain plants are highly effective against specific types of zombies, such as a magnet-shroom that can remove a bucket being used for defense from a zombie's head.

The zombies also come in a number of types that have different attributes, in particular speed, damage tolerance, and abilities. As the player progresses in the game, the zombies will include those wearing make-shift armor, those that are able to jump or fly over plants, and even a Thriller-inspired zombie that is able to summon more zombies from the ground. In each level, zombies will approach the house randomly except at special points where the player will be inundated with a "huge wave" of zombies; a meter on screen shows an approximate timeline for the level so the player can prepare for these waves.

In some levels, the player will be provided with a random seed pack, with no sunlight requirement, at regular intervals, and the player must figure out how best to survive with the random seeds given. In another mode, the player can engage in "zombie bowling", using special plants to mow down advancing zombies.

Killing zombies and finishing the levels will earn the player money that can be used at Crazy Dave's store to buy new seed packs and other bonuses. The game also features extra modes that are unlockable as the player progresses through the game's main Adventure mode. These include an endless survival mode, a puzzle mode and a selection of minigames which include zombie-themed versions of other PopCap games like Bejeweled and Insaniquarium. The game also features a "zen garden", where players can care for plants they acquire from fallen zombies during gameplay. Plants stored here produce money for the player as long as they are provided with items they ask for, such as water and plant food. The in-game store also carries items that help with the zen garden.

All in all this is a fun game, nothing like killing a few hours killin zombies with nature!

The Zombie Survival Guide
Max Brooks

Picture
The Zombie Survival Guide, published in 2003 by Random House, is a survival manual dealing with the potentiality of a Zombie attack. Its author, Max Brooks, lays out detailed plans for the average citizen to survive zombie uprisings of varying intensity and reach, also describes "cases" of zombie outbreaks in history! Also spawned a tie-in Comic written by Brooks and illustrated by Ibraim Roberson, it was released on October 6, 2009.

The Summary

The book is divided into six separate chapters, a fictional list of attacks throughout history and an appendix.

The first chapter is entitled "The Undead: Myths and Realities". It lays down the specific ground rules that are referenced repeatedly in the book. The first of these describes "Solanum", the fictional virus that creates a Zombie, along with details on how it is spread (such as through an open wound, when coming in contact with infected blood or saliva), and treatment of the infected (suicide or amputation of the bitten/scratched limb, though amputation rarely works). The middle of this chapter explains the abilities and behavioral patterns of the Undead and the differences between "voodoo" zombies and zombies created by "Solanum". The end of the chapter discusses the levels of zombie outbreaks and how severe of a threat each is to humankind.

The second chapter, "Weapons and Combat Techniques", discusses the weapons at the average reader's disposal and weighs them against the various threats that may be faced during confrontations with the Undead. The M1 Carbine and the machete, as portrayed on the cover of the book, as well as the crowbar and Shaolin Spade, receive the strongest recommendation.

The third chapter, "On the Defense", focuses on how to turn residential or public buildings into a base. It discusses the pros and cons for each different type of building, what supplies to gather, where to find a new shelter and maintain a new one should it ever be over-run.

The fourth chapter, "On the Run", discusses the rules and necessities of traveling through zombie-infested territory. It also discusses types of terrain and the pros and cons of different types of transportation.

While all previous chapters emphasize avoiding zombies at all costs, chapter five, "On the Attack", however specifically deals with engaging ghouls to ensure their destruction. It discusses the strategies and tools to eradicate zombies from an area.

The sixth chapter, "Living in an Undead World" looks at survival during a doomsday scenario that would see zombies becoming the dominant species on Earth. Advice in this section is adapted from previous sections by referring to a more serious Class-4 outbreak (previous chapters discussed a less widespread Class-3 outbreak). Brooks explains the separate chapter is only useful in the case of a nearly-impossible outbreak, and primarily focuses on creating a new civilization as far away from current civilizations as possible to avoid all contact with zombies and a new threat: marauders and bandit tribes.

The guide concludes with a fictional list of documented zombie encounters throughout history. The oldest entry is 60,000 BC, in Katanga, Central Africa, although the author expresses doubt to its validity. Instead, he presents evidence from 3,000 BC in Hieraconpolis, Egypt as the first verifiable instance of a zombie outbreak. The most recent entry is 2002 in Saint Thomas, US Virgin Islands.

The Appendix takes the form of a sample "Outbreak Journal", with the author noting a covered-up zombie outbreak being seen on the local news and the preparation steps he takes in the event that the outbreak worsens. The following pages are blank entries, for the reader to use as a basis for their own journal; their inclusion furthers the overall feel that the book is a survival guide to a life-threatening possibility.

If your a Zombie fan and want to survive the Zombie Apocalypse then this book is a Must Own!

Shaun of the Dead
A Romantic Comedy. With Zombies!

Picture
Shaun of the Dead is a 2004 British horror comedy directed by Edgar Wright, starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, and written by Pegg and Wright. Pegg plays Shaun, a man attempting to get some kind of focus in his life as he deals with his girlfriend, his mother and stepfather. At the same time he has to cope with an apocalyptic uprising of Zombies!

The film, the "first romantic zombie comedy or 'rom-zom-com'", is also the first of what Pegg and Wright call their "Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy" with Hot Fuzz as the second and The World's Endas the third.

The Plot

Shaun (Simon Pegg) is an appliance salesman whose life is without direction; his girlfriend Liz (Kate Ashfield) is dissatisfied with their social life, primarily because it consists of spending nearly every evening in The Winchester, Shaun's favorite pub with Shaun's best friend and housemate, Ed (Nick Frost) and Liz's flatmates, David (Dylan Moran) and Dianne (Lucy Davis). He has issues with his stepfather Phillip (Bill Nighy) and another, increasingly unhappy housemate, Pete (Peter Serafinowicz), and a dissatisfying job where his younger co-workers show him no respect. While Pete demands that Ed be evicted, due to his laziness, that same evening Liz dumps Shaun for not fulfilling his promise of doing something special for their anniversary. He drowns his sorrows at the Winchester with Ed. After Pete berates him and tells him to "sort his life out," he has an epiphany and resolves to sort his life out and win Liz back.

This revelation comes at the same time as an uprising of the undead within London, who begin to attack and devour the living, although the hungover Shaun does not notice. Shaun finally realizes what is happening only after two zombies attack him in his back garden. Shaun and Ed try to kill the garden zombies by throwing albums at them and, when these prove useless, they arm themselves with a cricket bat and spade. As Shaun finds out Pete has become a zombie after some had "mugged" him the previous day, Shaun and Ed plan to leave the house. They rescue Liz, along with Shaun's mother Barbara (Penelope Wilton) and Phillip, who had been bitten earlier, and wait the crisis out in the Winchester. David and Dianne decide to come along as well.

During their journey, Phillip is mortally wounded but manages to make peace with Shaun before turning into a zombie, forcing the group to abandon him and their car and proceed on foot. The group find the Winchester surrounded by zombies, and they approach the pub by impersonating zombies, but they are discovered after the zombies hear them arguing. Shaun draws the undead away while the others barricade themselves inside. Shaun returns to the pub thinking that he eluded the zombie crowd.

The time barricaded in the pub, along with the stress of fighting the encroaching zombies, gives way to angry confessions about one another. David refuses to admit he is in love with Liz, but Dianne reveals that she knows David loves Liz and not her.

The zombies soon break in. Shaun is forced to shoot his mother, who was bitten on the way to the Winchester and is turning into a zombie. Shaun is in tears, and David tells him he did the right thing, which prompts Shaun to punch David in the face. David is pulled through a smashed window, torn apart and eaten; Dianne charges outside in a futile attempt to save David (according to a DVD extra, Dianne survives by climbing up a tree and waiting out the apocalypse). Ed prepares a Molotov Cocktail, but after attempting to choke Pete, another zombie attacked him. Pete is then shot in the head by Shaun. Escaping into the cellar, Ed decides to stay behind while Shaun and Liz escape through the barrel lift. Shaun and Liz briefly debate a murder/suicide of themselves, but can't decide who should shoot whom first. As the zombies break into the cellar, Shaun and Liz prepare for one last battle against the zombie horde, but, at that moment, the British Army, along with Shaun's old friend, Yvonne (Jessica Hynes)come to their aid. They hold hands as they approach a truck, reconciled.

Six months after the zombie outbreak, society has returned to normal, and the remaining zombies, who retain their primal instincts, have now become a part of everyday life, being used as cheap labor and game show participants. Shaun and Liz have moved in together, along with zombified Ed, who is kept chained in the garden shed, playing TimeSplitters 2!

If you haven't seen this movie yet you must be living in a cave, a MUST SEE!

2006's Dead Rising
xBox 360 & Wii

Picture
Dead Rising is an action-adventure, survival horror video game, developed by Capcom and produced by Keiji Inafune. Originally developed as an exclusive title for the Xbox 360 video game console, a Wii console remake was released in February 2009 titled Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop! Dead Rising was released on August 8, 2006 in North America and in Japan on September 28, 2006. The game was a commercial success. It has been introduced into the Xbox 360 "Platinum Hits"  lineup, and a cell phone version has recently been released.

The Plot

The game focuses on the exploits of Frank West, a photojournalist investigating why the fictional town of Willamette, Colorado has been sealed off by the Colorado Army National Guard. Frank is dropped on top of the city's mall by helicopter; he tells the pilot, Ed DeLuca, to return in 72 hours. Upon entering the mall, Frank finds zombies mobbing the front entrance, eventually being let in by a panicked older woman looking for her dog. A Homeland Security officer named Brad urges everyone to retreat to the security room. Frank is the only one to reach the room with Brad and upon entering, the janitor, Otis Washington, welds the door shut. Brad then leaves the security room via the air ducts. Jessie, also of Homeland Security, recognizes an old man she identifies as Dr. Barnaby in one of Frank's photos, but neither Brad nor Jessie are willing to share what they know. After receiving a transceiver and map from Otis in order to be kept informed of the mall's events, Frank returns to the mall through the air ducts. He encounters survivors who need his assistance to the security room, as well as other people driven to madness by the zombie infestation, known as Psychopaths. As the story unfolds, Frank and Brad have a series of violent encounters with Carlito, a mysterious man, while Frank continues to come across a beautiful woman named Isabella. Frank and Brad are eventually able to bring Barnaby and later, Isabella to the security room. Isabella reveals she is Carlito's sister and that Barnaby was the head of an American research laboratory in the fictional Central American city of Santa Cabeza, the hometown of Carlito and Isabella. When Frank questions him, he confesses that the research facility was attempting to find methods of mass-producing cattle, but instead, Barnaby and his team genetically engineered a wasplike insect that would turn living organisms into zombies by stinging to inject a number of eggs, which quickly hatch into parasitic larvae, into the victim's bloodstream; "zombification" occurs when one such larva fully develops within the brainstem, killing the host and taking control of its body. After one of the Queen insects escaped and infected the town of Santa Cabeza, the US government sent a Special Forces team in to wipe out the entire city. The massacre was covered up under the pretenses that it was a raid on drug trade operations. Outraged over the slaughter of his people and home, Carlito released these insects in Willamette to obtain revenge and blackmailed Dr. Barnaby into coming to the mall. After Barnaby reveals the true nature of the infection he becomes a zombie himself and attacks, but is shot in the head by Brad before he can harm Frank.

The zombie outbreak in Willamette is only the tip of the iceberg; as Isabella later explains, Carlito has much bigger plans. Hidden beneath the mall are five bombs that when detonated will propel immature queen larvae into the stratosphere, making a worldwide zombie pandemic a possibility. Frank is able to disarm the bombs, but Brad is turned into a zombie while pursuing Carlito. Frank and the remaining survivors turn their attention towards escaping to safety. Isabella reveals that Carlito has a hideout in the mall containing a laptop full of information, as well as a jamming device preventing Jessie from calling for outside help. Jessie tracks Carlito to an underground meat processing plant via the security cameras and Frank rescues him from an insane butcher, but is unable to acquire the laptop password from Carlito before he dies from his wounds. However, Carlito's dying request is to give Isabella his locket which helps her figure out the laptop password and deactivate the jamming device.

Jessie places a call for help, only to be told that another cleanup mission has been authorized instead; special forces soldiers arrive in the mall shortly thereafter, killing all zombies and survivors to cover up the incident. Frank makes his way back to the security room, only to find it empty, save for two dead soldiers killed by Jessie, now zombified from Barnaby's earlier attack. A note reveals that Otis has commandeered a helicopter and flown himself and the remaining survivors to safety. After avoiding capture by the special forces soldiers, Frank makes his way back to Carlito's hideout and asks Isabella to come with him to the helipad; she refuses. Frank makes his way back to the helipad to meet Ed. The helicopter arrives on time, but as Ed prepares to land a stowaway zombie aboard the helicopter attacks him, causing Ed to lose control of the helicopter and crash into the park at the center of the mall. The game seemingly ends as Frank slumps to his knees in defeat, doing nothing to avoid the small group of zombies approaching him.

A sequel, entitled Dead Rising 2, is being developed by Blue Castle Games alongside many of the previous developers of Dead Rising. The game is set to release July 30, 2010.

Patient Zero
A Joe Ledger Novel

Picture
When you have to kill the same terrorist twice in one week there's either something wrong with your world or something wrong with your skills... and there's nothing wrong with Joe Ledger's skills.  And that's both a good, and a bad thing.  It's good because he's a Baltimore detective that has just been secretly recruited by the government to lead a new taskforce created to deal with the problems that Homeland Security can't handle. This rapid response group is called the Department of Military Sciences or the DMS for short. It's bad because his first mission is to help stop a group of terrorists from releasing a dreadful bio-weapon that can turn ordinary people into zombies. The fate of the world hangs in the balance....

Review

Patient Zero: A Joe Ledger Novel is the story of a Baltimore, Md. Police officer, former military, who is recruited by a (everyone say it with me now) “super secret government organization”, in this case named innocuously enough Department of Military Science, to help fight a terrorist organization that has apparently developed a virus that turns people into flesh-hungry zombies. That’s the plot in a nutshell but there is, of course, much more to it. There’s international intrigue, interpersonal relationships laced with love and trust and hatred and betrayal. There are good guys who really are bad guys and bad guys who turn out to be Evil Incarnate. And, of course, there are various shades of gray throughout the novel.

Ledger’s team at DMS, codenamed Team Echo, is filled with characters which are real characters, all of them very distinct individuals who really stand out from the page and draw the reader into the story. They are drawn from various disciplines and government organizations, from the military to the CIA. Top Sims, Skip Tyler, Ollie Brown, and Harvey Rabbit (that is really his name) are all very different people who ostensibly share only one thing: a love of country. Mr. Church, the mind behind the DMS and someone whom everyone in DC fears apparently, is enigmatic and very hard to get any kind of read on but Maberry still gives him life and vibrancy. Grace Courtland is the other team leader we get to meet here and we watch her transition from a coldly military cipher into a real flesh and blood woman the reader cares about. There is intrigue within this organizational dynamic, as it is shown early on that there is a traitor lurking somewhere in its midst. It is also shown that most of these people have been recruited and put together in a very short amount of time, leaving the reader no way to truly judge who might or might not be on the up and up. The only people we can be pretty sure about throughout the novel are Joe Ledger and his friend, the police psychologist Rudy Sanchez, who is brought in by Ledger after his first “job interview” with Church.

If the “secret government organization run by the strange man with no discernable past and answerable to virtually no one” makes an unlikely refuge for the heroes of the novel, the villains at least fall under familiar categories. First we have Sebastian Gault, the pharmaceutical billionaire who applies seemingly endless layers of secrecy and machinations to the plot he believes he has concocted, and his Man Friday known to the reader only as Toys. These two represent the “evil corporation” side of the villainous duplex. The other side is represented by El Mujahid, a Muslim terrorist whose hatred of infidels Gault uses to accomplish Gault’s ends, and Amirah, El Mujahid’s wife who is having an affair with Gault and is a fabulously brilliant scientist in her own right. It is Amirah who runs the lab that makes and upgrades the virus. Evil Corporation and Islamic Jihad make uneasy allies, each wanting what it wants and not big on sharing.

I haven’t said much about the zombies themselves here because they do change through the book, as the disease is mutated and refined. They start out as mindless drones whose only purpose seems to be to gain sustenance by consuming the living. Dr. Hu will tell us later that they aren’t really dead in the strictest sense. The disease reactivates the brain of its host but only after oxygen deprivation and the virus has destroyed higher brain function. It then automatically shuts down any part of the body too damaged to function while keeping the brain going. Their only real purpose in violence and biting seems to be to spread the disease, which makes it seem very much like The Rage from 28 Days Later.

This ones a good read, some good action and even a little romance for those softies out there!

Blast From The Past
1978's Dawn of the Dead

Picture
Dawn of the Dead (also known as Zombi internationally) is a 1978 Zombie Film, written and directed by George A. Romero. It was the second film made in Romero's Living Dead Series, but contains no characters or settings from its predecessor, and shows in larger scale a Zombie epidemic's apocalyptic effects on society. In the film, a pandemic of unknown origin has caused the reanimation of the dead, who prey on human flesh, which subsequently causes mass hysteria. The cast features David Emge, Ken Foree, Scott Reiniger, and Gaylen Ross as survivors of the outbreak who barricade themselves inside a suburban Shopping Mall.

The Plot

Following the scenario set up in Night Of The Living Dead, the film depicts the US (and possibly the entire world) struck by a Plague which reanimates recently deceased human beings whose new primary goal is to feast on the flesh of the living. The cause of this plague remains adamantly unexplained. Despite desperate efforts by the US Government and local civil authorities to control the situation, society has effectively collapsed and the remaining survivors seek refuge. Although several scenes show rural citizens and military fighting the zombies effectively, cities, with their high populations and close quarters, are essentially deathtraps. The chaos is eventually implied to have spread throughout the country, evident by infrequent television and radio broadcasts.

The film opens in the WGON TV studio in Philadelphia, where confusion reigns. Following some exposition, prompted by Stephen and Francine — who are planning to sneak out and steal the studio's traffic helicopter to escape the zombie threat — the plot turns to another of the film's protagonists, Roger, as he and the rest of his SWAT team raid an apartment building (presumably because the residents, mostly Hispanic and Black Caribbeans, are ignoring the martial law imposition of delivering the dead over to National Guardsmen). The immigrants are slaughtered by the SWAT operatives (led by a racist officer) and by their own (hungry) reanimated dead who emerge from the rooms they were in, after dying from the zombie infection and being reanimated. During the raid, Roger meets Peter, part of another SWAT team, and the two go down to the apartment building basement to find the stairs missing and meet a one legged priest who had just gave the undead dead their last rites, the basement is packed full of undead that were kept by the living residents from being seized by the National Guard, who the two kill. It is during this time that Peter suggests they desert their SWAT team and flee the city. Late that night, along with Francine and Stephen, they escape Philadelphia in the TV station's helicopter, with the intention of reaching the safety of the Canadian wilderness. Following some close calls while stopping for fuel, the group happens to come across a shopping mall which becomes their own private sanctuary. To make the mall safe for habitation, they must kill off the mall's zombie infestation and block the large glass doors with trucks to keep the undead gathered outside the mall from entering. During the operation, the impulsive Roger becomes reckless and is bitten, dooming him to death. After clearing the mall of its zombie inhabitants, the four settle in, each indulging their every material desire. Eventually dying from his wounds, Roger is shot by Peter as he begins to reanimate. Time passes, as the undead paw at the mall entrances and society beyond those doors continues to collapse. As the novelty of their materialistic utopia wears thin, they begin to realize their refuge has become their prison. Francine is also roughly four months pregnant, presumably by Stephen (implied in an earlier scene), though her condition was not obvious at first. After Roger dies, there is a jump-cut to what appears to be several months later, as Francine is now heavily pregnant. By this time, all emergency broadcast transmissions from the outside world have ceased entirely.

Their "liberation" comes as a gang of bikers break into the mall and in the process, let in hundreds of the undead creatures. (The inability of humans to cooperate with each other is a greater danger than the undead, a key theme in every Dead film). During their plunder, Stephen foolishly initiates a battle with the bikers. In the end, the only true victors are the ravenous zombies, who feast upon many of the bikers, and Stephen dies from his wounds inflicted by the zombies. When the remaining bikers retreat from the mall as the zombies become too numerous, Stephen reanimates as a zombie. Upon Stephen's reanimation, he leads a large group of the creatures to Francine and Peter, who await Stephen's return. After killing Stephen, Peter and Francine escape to the roof — and to an uncertain but still much more positive future as they fly away in the partially-fueled helicopter, ending the movie. As the credits roll by, there are multiple shots of the mall as it is, once again zombie infested.

There is also an Alternate Ending to this movie the finale in the final cut of the film was not what Romero had originally planned. According to the original screenplay, Peter was to shoot himself in the head instead of making a heroic escape. Fran would commit suicide by thrusting her head into the helicopter's propeller blades. The end credits would run over a shot of the helicopter's blades turning until the engine winds down, implying that Fran and Peter would not have had enough fuel to escape.  During production it was decided, however, to change the ending of the film.

I think I prefer the ending that was left in the movie, gives you more hope if something like this were to happen!  A Great overall flick, lots of action and a believable scenario, A Must See!

Zombie Apocalypse
PS3 & Xbox 360

Picture
Zombie Apocalypse is a shoot'em up style game created by Nihilistic Software and published by Konami for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.  It was release in late September 2009 Worldwide.

Nihilistic sought to make a pure arcade shooter, akin to Robotron 2084 and Smash TV.  Inspiration for the environments and characters was taken from zombie films, including Night Of The Living Dead and Return Of The Living Dead.

Zombie Apocalypse is a multidirectional shoot 'em up. The player controls one of four characters through 55 levels set in 7 different maps. The player's main objective is to kill wave after wave of zombies using a range of weapons and the environment. Secondary to this is to save survivors, who appear randomly throughout the level and can be rescued via helicopter. Use of environmental kills rewards the player with more points for their score via a multiplier which resets back to 0 upon death. Each of the game's modes can be played in single player, local co-op or online multiplayer, supporting up to 4 players.

Gameplay is simple, using just the right analog stick to shoot your weapons in all multi directions, which range from your default unlimited machine gun through to powerup weapons that have a limited amount of ammo, such as shotguns, akimbo uzi's, sniper rifles, molotov cocktails, grendade launchers, chainsaw and rocket launchers. The game also uses "zombie bait" similar to the "monkeys" from COD 5 WAW, the Zombie Bait is a teddy bear where, when thrown, attracts the zombies to it and then detonates as the bait is also C4 in disguise !

Playing through the game you can unlock several new game modes such as Turbo (allows the game to be played at twice the speed, guns and zombies move faster), Chainsaw only mode, 7 days of Hell Mode also (the average level has 100 - 250 zombies, 7 Days of Hell has minimum 1500 zombies per level !) Blackout mode (playing the game through all the levels without streetlights).

Not one of the greatest games ever but its fun being what it is, a Zombie Shoot'em Up!
